Aleks Byrds Kindred Knits: Patterns from My Estonian Family Archives ist eine faszinierende Kollektion von Strickdesigns, inspiriert von den alten Skizzenbüchern ihrer estnischen Großmutter Hilja sowie von handwerklichen Familienerbstücken. Das Buch enthält 15 Anleitungen – von Socken und Mützen bis zu Pullovern und Cardigans – und nutzt eine Vielzahl von Techniken, darunter Spitze, Zöpfe und Colourwork sowie Roosimine, die traditionelle estnische Einlegetechnik. Die Modelle sind innovativ und modern und zugleich tief in der Tradition verwurzelt – eine Hommage an frühere Generationen und ihre gemeinsame Liebe zum Handwerk.

Aleks Byrd ist Illustratorin und Strickdesignerin mit estnischen, kanadischen und amerikanischen Wurzeln. Besonders bekannt ist sie dafür, traditionelle estnische Stricktechniken in die Gegenwart zu übertragen. Techniken wie Roosimine und Vikkel hat sie Strickerinnen und Strickern auf der ganzen Welt nähergebracht. Kindred Knits ist ihr zweites Strickbuch: Ihr innovatives Debüt Traditions Revisited erschien 2022 bei Laine Publishing.

These satin pillowcases in silver are so luxurious looking and feeling! I flop around at night and need a pillowcase like this to prevent the rats’ nests that form in my fine hair. I didn’t see any washing instructions but from experience I will give them a quick handwashing in the sink and hang to dry.

I really wanted to love these satin pillowcases, but they fell short. While they look nice at first and feel cool when you lay down, the material is very slippery and constantly slides around during the night. By morning, the pillowcase is usually twisted or halfway off the pillow. They also feel thinner than expected and don’t hold up well after washing, even on a gentle cycle. For the price, I was hoping for better quality and durability. They might work for occasional use, but they didn’t meet my expectations for everyday sleep.
