Was bedeutet „Kunst als öffentliche Angelegenheit“? Was ist Öffentlichkeit? Und nicht zuletzt: Wie ist das Verhältnis zwischen Kunst und Öffentlichkeit? Dies sind die drei Fragen, denen die Ausstellung und das begleitende Buch nachgehen wollen, ausgehend von Boris Groys' Essay Kunst im Zeitalter der Demokratie. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die vier existenziellen Momente Isolation/Einsamkeit, Sinnlosigkeit, Freiheit und Tod sowie deren politische Instrumentalisierung. Diese vier Zustände des Seins werden anhand verschiedener psychologischer Mechanismen, politischer Agenden und existenzieller Fragen in Auseinandersetzung mit Begriffen wie Wohlfahrtsstaat, nationale Identität, Solidarität, Geburt, Tod, Totalitarismus, Migration, Massenbewegungen, Ikonoklasmen, Psychose, Intimität, Peinlichkeit und Scham untersucht.Claus Carstensen (geb. 1954) ist Künstler, Kurator und Autor.
