The iPad 9th Gen (2021) has a 10.2-inch Retina IPS LCD display with a non-laminated construction, meaning the outer glass and LCD panel are separate layers. Because of this, the iPad 9 is one of the few current iPad models where glass-only repair is viable if the LCD is undamaged.
A full LCD replacement is needed when the display panel itself is affected, typically showing lines, dead pixels, pooling of light at screen edges, or a completely black screen. If only the outer glass is cracked and the display beneath looks correct, a glass touchscreen repair at a lower cost may be sufficient.
When is a full LCD replacement needed?
Not all screen damage requires a full LCD replacement. If the display itself is functioning correctly and only the outer glass is cracked, a glass touchscreen repair may be sufficient. An LCD replacement is needed when the display panel is damaged.
- Lines, bands, or blocks of colour across the screen
- Dead pixels or patches of discolouration that do not move
- Display flickering or strobing
- Black screen with the device powered on and responsive to touch
- Dim display or significant brightness loss that cannot be corrected in Settings
- Bleed or pooling of light at the edges of the display
