Paul Klee, Gradation "Red-Green (Vermilion)" 1921

The range of exploration and experimentation in Klee’s work across technique, form, colour and subject matter is astounding. This gradation work encompasses many of his teaching principles including colour theory, algebra, balance and inspiration from nature. Its repetition in a variety of colour weights also touches on his interest in connecting music and visual expression. 

The overlapping increasing and decreasing forms between black and vermillion give a sense of movement but also of reaching in and through. Of forces that reach beyond our sensory perception of this world into another… embodying Klee’s principle of using art to guide us beyond the material world towards the many realities he believed were open to human awareness.

Attributed to Paul Éluard 1895 - 1952

"There is another world, and it is in this one."

Considered one of the founding fathers of Surrealism, Éluard was a friend and influence on any number of the Parisian avant-garde. The artists with whom Éluard collaborated reads like a roll-call of 20th century giants: Ernst, Dalí, Man Ray, Picasso, Chagall, de Chirico, Léger and Miró to name a few. 

Like Klee, Éluard believed we are able to access another world and revolutionize human experience via our present reality. Through surrealism, this is achieved by freeing us from restrictive customs, structures and false rationality. This can be done by juxtaposing distant realities, embracing idiosyncrasy, poetic undercurrents and non-literal meaning - for example, in the way that our dreams seem to work. We can liberate our imaginations, give power to previously neglected associations and raise up the superior world lying hidden in this one. You can carry Vermillion as a prompt and inspiration to do just this.
