Hair Jewelry either mourning or for remembrance was popular in the mid 1800's. Photography was not readily available, portraits were expensive, so these treasures were made so one could carry a small part of their loved one with them.
This brooch measures 1 3/4" x 1 5/8". It is in excellent condition and the clasp still works perfectly. It is not marked for gold content but has been acid tested to 14 karat gold. Circa 1880.
