‘From ecologies of human and nonhuman abundance to environmental threats, from disruptive colonial and migratory ocean crossings to the sea’s sensuous connectivity, from brittlestars to microbial and technological aquatic agents, this volume casts a wide net of artistic, literary and multidisciplinary references introducing the oceans as a vital subject in contemporary art.’

– Stefanie Hessler, Contemporary art curator, art writer, Director of Swiss Institute, New York, and author of Prospecting Ocean (2019)

‘Our relationship with the seas and oceans and the huge threats they are facing is not just one of scientific measurement and experiment; each of us has a personal connection. Beyond what we understand, we feel and imagine the sea. Pandora Syperek and Sarah Wade have brought together this wonderful anthology containing some of the most important and diverse artist and curator voices internationally, who explore the extraordinary oceanic world now and historically. This book powerfully demonstrates that artists, the greatest imaginers, have a vital role in protecting our oceans; giving us hope, new visions and inspiration.’

– Alice Sharp, Artistic Director of the art and environment organisation Invisible Dust

Edited by Pandora Syperek & Sarah Wade

Oceans cover more than 70 percent of the Earth’s surface, dividing and connecting humans, who carry saltwater in their blood, sweat and tears. They also represent a powerful nonhuman force, rising, flooding, heating and raging in unprecedented ways as the climate crisis unfolds. Artists have envisioned the sea as a sublime wilderness, home to mythical creatures and bizarre species, a source of life and death, a site of new beginnings and tragic endings, both wondrous and disastrous. From migration to melting ice caps, the sea is omnipresent in international news and politics, leaking into popular culture and proliferating in recent art and exhibitions. This anthology gathers artists and writers to address the ocean not only as a theme but as a major agent of artistic and curatorial methods.

I think it's large for a clutch,but it's beautiful!
Color: Natural
I ordered this purse because I just love how different and fun it is. I thought it would be great for a sunny vacation. The first thing I noticed when it arrived was that it's much bigger than I thought it would be. The size is mostly in the raffia design. The purse itself is clutch-size, able to hold your phone, credit cards, and some lip gloss. Due to the size of the whole purse, I think it could use an optional strap. The quality and the craftsmanship are top-notch, however. The raffia is amazing, and the colors are very similar to a grass skirt, making it perfect for a tropical vacation or Polynesian-themed get-together.

Taco Purse
Color: Spicy
This might be the silliest bag my wife and I own, but it's definitely unique. I call it "the taco bag," and that's 100000% what it looks like to me. It's a clutch so it's not practical for every day use if you want to keep your hands free, but it has a fun, summery vibe that makes me think my wife would look great in a sundress at a pool party carrying this. Maybe. I honestly am not sure what kind of outfit this bag goes with, but it is exactly as pictured and it feels very well made, which I have come to expect from Sam Edelman. We have several bags by them and they are all lovely, this is the weirdest one and the hardest to figure out where we're going to use it, but I'm not mad I have it and if you like the taco look it lives up to it in person.

Stylish Clutch That Adds a Nice Pop of Color
Color: Spicy
This clutch is such a pretty accessory and the Spicy color really stands out in the best way. It adds a nice pop to an outfit without being too loud, and the shade works well across different seasons. The size is practical for carrying the essentials like a phone, cards, keys, and a lipstick without feeling bulky. I like that it looks polished enough for a dressier event but can still work for a casual dinner out. The material and hardware feel well made, and it has that classic Sam Edelman look that feels put together. It fits comfortably in hand and is easy to carry through the evening. The design is simple but elevated, which makes it versatile. Overall, this is a stylish handbag that feels both useful and attractive.
