The advantage of a leaf separator as opposed to a leaf catcher in the gutter, is when the leaf catcher is full of leaves, it blocks the gutter and prevents the rainwater from flowing into the downpipe. A blocked gutter can lead to flooding, causing rainwater to run down walls and windows, and sometimes even into the building.

The leaf separator has a grate that ejects the leaves and allows the rainwater to pass flow into the drainage system. The ejected leaves can easily be removed with a foliage scraper.

Another advantage of the leaf separator is that the gutter will not overflow if the drainage capacity behind the separator is insufficient. The leaf separator therefore acts as an overflow.
