The Master Move by Mark StrivingsI have a secret. It's a secret that I have been keeping very quiet for a couple of decades now. So quiet, in fact, that in those 20+ years, I have only shared it with one person. Apart from that, I have never even hinted at the existence of this secret to anyone for any reason. I consider it to be one of my most valuable secrets, and I have been very seriously considering keeping it entirely to myself just as I have done for more than 20 years. But I

I have a secret.

But I am getting to a point in life where it no longer makes sense to 'take it with you', as it were.
Besides, this is a secret that I am quite certain an awful lot of people are going to get some serious use from. So many of you out there are incredibly creative, and the thought occurred to me a while back that I should set this free and see where it goes. It's quite utilitarian in nature and, as such, is open to all kinds of uses. I only use it for two things. I'll be honest with you. I cannot wait to see what you do with it once you get your hands on it.

So what is it?

The physical product itself is a small booklet. But as we all know, it's not the size of the publication, it's what is in the publication that counts.

This booklet describes a maneuver that I stumbled across by accident many years ago and built into a masterpiece of subtlety and deception.

I have gone out of my way not to perform this around other magicians and mentalists over the years. Now, in hindsight, I'm not really sure why I did this. The move is practically invisible, and there's no way to backtrack the thing. The guys wouldn't have stood a chance anyway. But I can tell you for a fact that for those few times when I did troop this out, and other performers were in the audience, I got extremely confused and seriously bewildered looks from these guys.

In short, I had fooled them badly.

Part of what fooled them so hard was that I was using a device they already had and knew how it worked. And I still fooled them badly. What they had just seen wasn't possible with the device in question, and yet there it was. Right before their eyes. They had just witnessed a complete impossibility.
It is never my priority to fool 'the boys'. My job is to entertain and fool the living crap out of regular people. But I must say, this will fool everyone - including 'the boys' - literally so hard that it is most gratifying.

I know that some of you reading this are getting impatient, so let me show you, or more accurately, have you show yourself exactly what this looks like.

Go get your Sight Unseen Case and an old playing card. I'll wait. If you don't have an SUC, you're about to kick yourself (and what are you thinking, anyway?) And BTW, this doesn't work with any of the hybrid wallets and such that have incorporated the SUC design over the years.

This only works with the SUC.

Remove everything you have in the SUC. Fold the playing card into quarters and put it into a pocket in your SUC, sticking out of the pocket so that you can see it clearly when the case is open. Close the case and lay it on the table.

This next part you can simply imagine if you'd like, although if you do this, it will happen for real. Take a deck of cards (imaginary in this case) and shuffle them thoroughly. Have a card selected from a deck. Have it signed. Shuffle it back into the deck. Make your mystical gesticulations and say your magic words. Now do this next part for real. Open your SUC that's sitting on the table, showing the card right where you left it. At this point, you would have your spectator remove it and unfold it; it's their signed card. That's what this looks like.

That is just one possible scenario, and it's one that I use regularly in my close-up work.

The other scenario where I use this is in a mentalism context. I have an endless number of directions I can go with this, but I'll give you the barest bones of one. I take a business card and write something on the back of it, fold it up, and place it into my SUC, similar to the above scenario, so that it can be seen when the case is open. I close the case and ask my helper to name their first childhood pet. They name it. Is there any way I could possibly have known that? Of course not. The case is opened up, and there is my folded business card right where I left it. The spectator removes it, opens it, and reads the back. It has the name of their first pet written on it. They weep tears of joy at having witnessed such a miracle.

These are but two possibilities with what I have here. The true possibilities are virtually endless.
But enough talk and vagueness. Allow me to introduce you to...

The Master Move by Mark Strivings

Do you own a Sight Unseen Case? If you do, then you need to learn 'The Master Move'. In this slim but pregnant volume, there is the secret to a maneuver that allows for miracles of incredible magnitude. As you have already read above, this is killer stuff. You will learn the basics of the entire maneuver in about five minutes, but the miracles that you will perform with it will create memories that last a lifetime.

In this profusely photo-illustrated volume, you will learn exactly how to create miracles like what you have just read, as well as provide you with the fuel to create endless other impossibilities. Here are a few things to keep in mind...
  • This is angle proof if you do it properly
  • Reset can be a matter of about two seconds, depending on what your routine is
  • The maneuver itself is very easy to do
  • This works with either model of the Sight Unseen Case, original or Generation II
  • This does not work with any other iteration of a wallet or business card case other than the SUC
  • You can learn the basics of the entire workings of this in less than five minutes
  • "The Master Move" is highly adaptable, and there are endless scenarios like those outlined above that are possible
  • The spectator removes the final revelation themselves
  • Both sides of the SUC can be shown before, during, and after the effect
  • This does not happen in the spectator's hands, but it is so incredibly clean it simply doesn't matter
  • This can be done in any surroundings, but works best (as I do it, anyway) in a close-up or parlor setting
All you need is a Sight Unseen Case and then decide what else you are going to use (billets, business cards, playing cards, etc.), and you can be ready to go within minutes of learning this.
You will find yourself coming up with all kinds of uses for it almost immediately. This is powerful stuff!

You get the slim but very pregnant, photo-illustrated volume, which tells you everything you need in detail.

Cornford's running commentary is arguably the best suited to fulfill this desire
Readers of any of Plato's works are bound to feel they might profit from various commentaries. His Timaeus, in particular, may be said to elicit such a hope because of number and intricacy of its details. Cornford's running commentary is arguably the best suited to fulfill this desire: it helps make clear the integrity of the dialogue as a whole and illumines the specific points along the way. Although this work is certainly dated, originally published in 1937, it is certainly one of the best full commentaries on the Timaeus.

Plato's view of the creation of the world
Format: Paperback
A cosmology is a narrative concerning the creation of the universe. Many ancient philosophers have written or elaborated this kind of work. The Platonic dialogue Timeus is an account of the work of the creator god (called the demiurge - or artisan) sculpting the chaotic material world in accordance with the immaterial model of the Ideas. But the text was written in a very hermetic and symbolic language, making its interpretation difficult or even impossible without the knowledge of the references and symbols used by Plato. This book is a complete translation of the text followed by a comprehensive commentary explaining in detail every passage. Francis MacDonald Cornford is one of the most important ancient philosophy scholars, and this work reveals his deep knowledge of Platonic and Greek thought. It is a must have for anyone interested in greek and Platonic philosophy.

Joy restored!
Format: Paperback
Now, to be honest, I've been a John & Stasi Eldredge reader for a long time. I love their books and their writing styles. But more than their skills with language is their transparency and candor. If you get the chance to meet them, you'll see that who they are in person is just how they portray themselves in their books. They're honest. They're kind--both with themselves and with others and they're consistently dedicated to telling the truth--no hype. No bait and switch. Now, to Defiant Joy. This is a book for those who have lost joy. This is a book for those who have been blinded to the subtle creep of disappointment and cynicism that has tragically become the filter through which they see life. Let's be honest. Life can really suck sometimes. And it's both understandable and inevitable that joy is harder and harder to find...much less experience. Stasi has lived enough life to understand that condition. She shares her own struggles and disappointments--all of which give her credibility when she invites her readers to consider seeking joy in the midst of less than joyful circumstances. "Defiant Joy" is a fitting title for those who don't want to give up yet; who don't want to give in to resignation. And that's the invitation Stasi gently offers--there is another option beside resignation, cynicism, depression and disillusionment. Joy! Who would have thought? Stasi writes like she talks. Reading her work is like sitting down with a good friend for an honest and frank conversation about what really matters. She's the kind of friend we all long to have--one who tells us what we need to hear instead of what we want to hear; one who tells us the truth, even when we've lost hope of ever finding it. You won't find any relativism or warm-fuzzy self-talk. This is not a self-help book. Stasi has suffered too much to offer simplistic answers to some of the most difficult questions. I highly recommend this book. It's on my suggested reading list for the community I lead. Stasi is one battle-experienced traveler who's offering other weary travelers hope for the journey ahead. I'll bet money you'll discover joy again.

You can experience joy!
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
What is joy? How does it compare to happiness? From where does joy come? How can we experience joy every day despite the pain and sorrow that we all experience? Stasi Eldredge writes honestly and poignantly from places of pain and sorrow in her own life - but doesn't leave us there. She leads us into hope, into beauty and into a new depth of life in God. She teaches us how to cultivate joy in really practical - and achievable - ways. I was especially struck by her walking through St. Patrick's Breastplate - an ancient prayer - and how I can turn from a place of failure and shame based on my performance to the King and His character and hide myself in Him. "I need mercy, and I know it. In that knowing comes a great gift. I turn my heart again to my kind and understanding God and confess to Him that I need mercy. His answer swamps my heart with a too-good-to-be-true reality that leads to a crumbling of hopelessness and shame. My self-loathing collapses into His love. My self-condemnation melts into His arms that welcome and soothe. I have blown it. The blowing now has become the wind of the Holy Spirit. Ruah is here. His breath shepherds my heart into my Father's, and there mercy triumphs over judgment." I encourage you to read this book. God will use it to restore your soul, to bring water to your dry and weary soul, and to help you find rest in His strong arms. You will not feel condemned, but encouraged. I found hope in its pages.
