COURSE OVERVIEW:
Welcome to the Preventing Workplace Accidents & Promoting Health course. This program equips you with the knowledge and practical skills needed to create safer work environments, minimise operational hazards, and strengthen health and safety performance across all industry settings. You will explore what a health and safety management system is, how to manage health and safety effectively, how to understand the risks in your work, and how to assess, control, prioritise, and monitor workplace risks. This introductory content also examines how to provide a safe workplace, a well-lit environment, and well-designed workstations, along with the importance of workplace cleanliness in preventing accidents.
This course begins by examining slips, trips, and general hazard prevention, focusing on the basic requirements for preventing slips and trips, what to look for when identifying hazards that cause slips, how to stop floors from becoming wet or contaminated, how to manage contaminated floors, what to look for when identifying trip hazards, and the additional factors that can cause slip or trip accidents. This section explains how these seemingly small issues contribute significantly to preventable injuries and lost productivity when they are not addressed systematically.
The next learning area explores workplace fire safety, including the sources of ignition, fuel, and oxygen, why you must carry out a fire risk assessment, how to identify fire hazards, how to identify people at risk, and the precautions needed to protect people in the event of a fire. This section also covers how to review fire risk assessments to ensure they remain accurate and effective over time.
Another part of the course focuses on safe work at height and construction-related safety practices, including how to ensure work at height is carried out safely, the correct use of ladders, how to avoid accidents during new construction or maintenance on existing buildings, how to protect other people during construction work, how to use mobile tower scaffolds safely, and how to work safely on roofs.
