Doxycycline is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It works by preventing bacteria from growing, which leads to their death. It's effective for various infections, including perioral dermatitis.
Perioral dermatitis is a term used for inflammation around the mouth. This skin condition mostly affects women and is marked by small spots and redness in the area. It can often be confused with eczema or rosacea due to similar symptoms. Therefore, it's wise to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis before starting any treatment.
How does Doxycycline work?
Doxycycline belongs to a group of medicines known as tetracyclines. These medicines work by halting the growth of bacteria. They achieve this by attaching to the part of the bacteria that makes proteins.
Perioral dermatitis isn't caused by a bacterial infection, but Doxycycline can still help with the symptoms. This is due to Doxycycline's anti-inflammatory properties, which help to clear up the spots and reduce redness.
What doses of Doxycycline are there?
Doxycycline comes in two strengths: 50mg and 100mg. Typically, you'll begin with a 100mg daily dose, which can be reduced to 50mg if necessary.
What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Doxycycline?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's nearly time for your next dose, just skip the one you missed. Avoid taking two doses at once to compensate.

Do I need to use extra sun protection when taking Doxycycline?
Doxycycline can increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight. To avoid any reactions, it's wise to cover up as much as possible and use sunscreen with at least SPF 30. However, be cautious, as certain sunscreens might actually worsen the condition.
Try to steer clear of sunscreens that have ingredients like niacinamide and vitamin C, as they could cause a flare-up. Some research suggests that chemical sunscreens may be more suitable than physical (or mineral) sunscreens for those with perioral dermatitis.
This happens because physical sunscreen forms a barrier on the skin's surface, which can trap moisture and bacteria. This might worsen the symptoms.
