Harbeth Nelson Bass Extender and Stand Speaker Solution at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The Nelson is a bass extender and integrated stand solution from Harbeth (Lindfield, England, United Kingdom), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Designed specifically for compact mini monitors including all Harbeth P3ESR and BBC LS3/5A models, the Nelson incorporates a 110mm Harbeth-made bass driver in a bandpass enclosure powered by 50 watts of digital amplification, extending low-frequency response down to 30Hz (±3dB) while functioning simultaneously as a purpose-built speaker stand. The Nelson solves two problems in a single product: it eliminates the compromises of conventional stand selection for compact monitors and delivers genuine subwoofer-grade bass extension without occupying additional floor space beyond the stand footprint the speaker already requires.

Bandpass Bass Extension: More Bass in the Same Space

The Nelson uses a 110mm Harbeth-manufactured bass drive unit loaded in a bandpass enclosure, a cabinet topology specifically chosen for its ability to produce high output over a defined and controlled frequency band with low distortion. The bandpass alignment filters the bass driver's output acoustically, producing a naturally rolled-off response above its operating range that integrates smoothly with the host loudspeaker's bass output beginning at 75Hz. This means the Nelson does not require an electronic low-pass filter in the signal path between the main amplifier and the host speaker, avoiding the phase and timing complications that conventional subwoofer crossovers can introduce. The result is a bass extension system that adds meaningful low-frequency output from 30Hz upward without creating an audible discontinuity between the sub-bass and the midrange of the P3ESR or LS3/5A mounted above it. The composite materials used in the Nelson's construction, inspired by aviation industry structural engineering practices, provide high cabinet stiffness with low mass, minimising resonance and cabinet colouration in the bass register.

Active Amplification and Signal Integration

The Nelson's internal 50W digital amplifier drives the 110mm bass unit directly, with the Nelson drawing its signal from the binding posts of the host loudspeaker rather than from a separate preamp output or line-level tap. A fitted lead connects the Nelson to the host speaker's binding posts, and the Nelson's transformer-balanced input presents an impedance greater than 5 kilohms to the main amplifier, meaning it draws virtually no current from the amplifier driving the host speaker and has no measurable effect on the amplifier's load characteristics or the host speaker's frequency response. This connection method makes the Nelson compatible with essentially any amplifier and host speaker combination, requiring no modification to the existing system and no additional interconnects or signal splitting hardware. A front-panel sub-level control allows the listener to adjust the bass output up or down to suit personal preference, room characteristics, and programme material, giving the system genuine flexibility across different listening situations and music genres.

Key Features

  • Integrated Stand and Bass Extender: The Nelson functions simultaneously as a purpose-built speaker stand and a powered bass extension system, adding 30Hz to 75Hz low-frequency output without requiring any additional floor space beyond the stand footprint the host speaker already occupies.
  • 110mm Harbeth-Made Bass Driver in Bandpass Enclosure: A Harbeth-manufactured 110mm bass unit loaded in a bandpass cabinet alignment delivers controlled, low-distortion bass output that integrates acoustically with the host speaker without requiring an electronic crossover in the main signal path.
  • 50W Digital Amplification: An internal 50W RMS digital amplifier powers the bass driver with sufficient headroom for high-output listening levels, maintaining tight bass control across the full dynamic range of the programme material.
  • Binding Post Signal Connection: A fitted lead connects the Nelson directly to the host speaker's binding posts, drawing signal in parallel with the main speaker without loading the amplifier or altering the host speaker's characteristics.
  • Greater Than 5 Kilohm Transformer-Balanced Input: The transformer-balanced active input presents virtually no load to the main amplifier, ensuring complete compatibility with tube and solid-state amplifiers of any output impedance.
  • Sub-Level Control: A continuously variable bass level control allows the listener to adjust the Nelson's output to match room acoustics, personal preference, and musical genre without tools or system reconfiguration.
  • Aviation-Inspired Composite Construction: Cabinet panels constructed from composite materials sourced from aerospace manufacturing practice provide high structural stiffness and low mass, minimising cabinet resonance and colouration in the bass register.
  • Compatible with Harbeth P3ESR and BBC LS3/5A Models: The Nelson is designed and dimensioned specifically for compact mini monitors including all Harbeth P3ESR variants and BBC LS3/5A models from manufacturers including Falcon Acoustics and Graham Audio.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Harbeth Nelson?

The Harbeth Nelson is an active bass extender and integrated loudspeaker stand manufactured in England, United Kingdom, designed specifically to partner with compact mini monitors including all Harbeth P3ESR variants and BBC LS3/5A models. It houses a 110mm Harbeth-made bass driver in a bandpass enclosure powered by a 50W digital amplifier, extending low-frequency response from the host speaker's bass roll-off down to 30Hz without occupying any additional floor space beyond the stand footprint. The Nelson connects to the binding posts of the host speaker rather than requiring a separate subwoofer output, making it fully compatible with any amplifier and speaker combination in the compact monitor category it is designed to serve.

How does the Harbeth Nelson compare to adding a conventional subwoofer beneath a P3ESR or LS3/5A?

The Harbeth Nelson differs from a conventional subwoofer in several important ways that make it better suited to integration with compact monitors like the P3ESR and LS3/5A. A conventional subwoofer typically requires a separate line-level connection from a preamplifier output or a high-level connection from the amplifier terminals, and uses its own low-pass crossover filter to limit the frequency range it reproduces. This crossover introduces phase and timing relationships between the subwoofer and the main speaker that can be difficult to optimise and that often produce an audible discontinuity in the bass-to-midrange transition. The Nelson avoids this by using a bandpass enclosure that provides acoustic rather than electronic low-pass filtering, and by connecting directly to the host speaker's binding posts in parallel, drawing signal in proportion to what the main speaker receives. The result is an integration that many listeners find significantly more seamless than a conventional subwoofer, with bass that sounds like a natural downward extension of the host speaker rather than a separate, detectable source.

Can the Harbeth Nelson be used with BBC LS3/5A speakers from other manufacturers?

Yes, the Harbeth Nelson is compatible with BBC LS3/5A loudspeakers from third-party manufacturers including Falcon Acoustics, Graham Audio, Rogers, and Stirling Broadcast, in addition to all Harbeth P3ESR variants. The Nelson connects via a fitted lead to the host speaker's binding posts and draws its signal in parallel with the main speaker, meaning it will work with any compact monitor that uses standard 4mm binding post connectors and has a bass roll-off in the region of 75Hz to 80Hz where the Nelson's bandpass output begins. The Nelson's stand height is dimensioned to bring the tweeter of a P3ESR to 1075mm from the floor, which also suits the tweeter height of most LS3/5A-format speakers. Buyers using non-Harbeth host speakers should confirm cabinet footprint compatibility with the Nelson's speaker mounting plate dimensions before purchasing.

Does the Harbeth Nelson require modification to the existing amplifier or speaker setup?

No, the Harbeth Nelson requires no modification to the existing amplifier or host speaker setup. The Nelson connects to the binding posts of the host loudspeaker using a fitted lead, drawing its signal in parallel with the main speaker. Its transformer-balanced active input presents an impedance greater than 5 kilohms to the main amplifier, which means it draws virtually no current and has no measurable effect on the amplifier's operating conditions or the host speaker's frequency response and impedance characteristics. The Nelson requires only a 24V DC power supply at 2A via a 5.5/2.1mm centre-positive connector, which is supplied with the unit. No additional preamplifier outputs, signal splitters, or Y-adaptors are required.

Where can I buy the Harbeth Nelson in Toronto or Canada?

The Harbeth Nelson is available at Vinyl Sound, an authorised Harbeth dealer in Toronto, Canada. Vinyl Sound carries the complete Harbeth product range and can provide expert guidance on pairing the Nelson with Harbeth P3ESR XD2 speakers, BBC LS3/5A models, and other compatible compact monitors. Canadian customers outside Toronto are welcome to contact Vinyl Sound directly for purchasing and shipping inquiries. Purchasing from an authorised dealer such as Vinyl Sound ensures full Harbeth manufacturer warranty support and access to properly demonstrated system configurations.

How do I set the sub-level control on the Harbeth Nelson?

The sub-level control on the Harbeth Nelson is a continuously variable adjustment that allows the listener to increase or decrease the bass output of the Nelson relative to the host speaker's own bass reproduction. Harbeth recommends beginning with the sub-level control set to a neutral position and then adjusting by ear while playing familiar programme material with known bass content, such as double bass, bass guitar, or kick drum recordings. Rooms with significant low-frequency reinforcement from walls and corners will typically require a lower sub-level setting than acoustically treated rooms or larger open spaces. The adjustment can also be used to tailor the tonal character of the system to personal preference, with a slightly higher setting producing a more full-bodied and bass-prominent presentation and a lower setting emphasising the transparency and imaging of the host speaker.

What is the correct stand height the Harbeth Nelson provides for a P3ESR?

The Harbeth Nelson positions the tweeter of a Harbeth P3ESR at 1075mm from the floor when the speaker is mounted on the Nelson's speaker mounting plate, which sits at 750mm from the floor. The total height from floor to the top of the P3ESR cabinet in this configuration is 1250mm. This tweeter height is intended to approximate ear level for a seated listener in a typical domestic listening environment, aligning with Harbeth's general guidance that stand height should be selected to bring the tweeter to approximately ear level when seated. Listeners with unusually high or low listening chairs may wish to confirm that the Nelson's fixed stand height suits their specific listening position before purchasing.

Awesome product!!!
Size: 3 Panel-102"W, Color: Beige, Size: 3 Panel-102"W, Color: Beige
This thing is really awesome. I actually bought 2 of them and made myself a nice little enclosure to keep out any peeping Toms while I’m trying to work on my summer tan. What I was looking for is FULL privacy and this DEFINITELY provides that. Fabric is completely opaque, you cannot see anything through it which is exactly what I needed. Another huge bonus is the strips of fabric to cover the spaces in between the panels, giving TRUE privacy. This is a really well-made product, great design, great structure, and pretty easy to put together overall. The only downside is that with strong gusts of wind, it wants to tip over so as you can see I secured the bottom feet with a couple bricks to make it stable and that did the trick. But to me that is a minor inconvenience given all its other great aspects. So many other privacy dividers were still see-through… totally defeating the purpose. But this one is absolutely full privacy and PERFECT for what I needed it for!!!

Broke within an hour of assembly.
Size: 6 Panel-120"W, Color: Beige
This is of horrible quality. Within an hour of building, the feet support were broken on both ends, where they spin in place & do not stay straight to hold the divider up. Pieces of the plastic on the feet were broken simply from assembling the product. The covers for the metal poles were the only reason I bought this divider instead of other similar products, however those only cover one side of the metal poles so they are still visible from the other side. Two of these covers were also torn & not useable within an hour of assembly, one was already partially ripped on arrival & the other one was ripped simply during assembly of the product. I do not recommend this item & would have returned if I was still in the return window. I missed the return window because the product was bought during the holidays & I didn’t have time to mess with the return. I have not been able to use this product even once, the broken feet which do not stay in place make it very unstable & dangerous.

Nice quality, looks brand new even with daily use! Worth it!
Size: 6 Panel, Color: White
I got the Rose Home 6 panel room divider folding privacy screen and I LOVE it. I use it every day - extending it out to both block the sun, provide a backdrop for my plant wall, use as a backdrop for zoom calls, create privacy at night in front of the big windows and clear doors, and make impromptu study privacy walls in the office. This 6-panel has been the GOAT! Even though the screen is made of a woven paper material, it is still going strong despite daily use and has NOT broken anywhere. The frame is taller than other folding screens I've purchased and this one is also heavier and sturdy. Additionally the hinges fold open in BOTH directions (some screens only fold open in 1 direction like a Z). I use the folding screens indoors, but they have no issue with the AC or fans for wind resistance indoors. Sometimes I use them to hide storage or junk in the corner and make the room look neater. I also have a different brand that is the same material but has 8 panels and I love them both. I got 2 others that were made from synthetic canvas webbing belt/leash fabric and those break so fast - I just had to throw 1 away. This one is worth the money, even after daily use, it looks brand new!
