The Multi-Stage Painting Process

Creating an Urushi masterpiece requires a disciplined, multi-layered approach handled by specialized craftsmen known as Nu-shi.

  • Shita-nuri (Base Painting): The process begins with Sabi (Urushi mixed with polishing powders) to create a smooth, durable foundation. This base is typically painted two to three times.

  • Naka-nuri (Interim Painting): One or two layers are applied to prepare for the final finish. The color of this layer is carefully selected to complement the intended final hue.

  • Uwa-nuri (Finishing): This final stage achieves the ultimate luster and depth. On average, a pen is painted seven times, a process that takes two to three weeks before it is passed to the Maki-e shi (Maki-e master) for further artistic work.

The Art of Tame-nuri

The Tame-nuri technique is designed to create a visual effect similar to "looking into a pond." It relies on the unique properties of natural lacquer:

  • Translucency: There is no 100% transparent natural Urushi; the clearest version (Suke-Urushi) maintains a light amber or honey-like tint. This amber hue interacts with the base color to create a unique, shifting depth that synthetic paints cannot replicate.

  • Technique: To achieve a red Tame-nuri finish, red Urushi is used for the interim layers, followed by a coating of translucent Suke-Urushi. This makes the red appear as if it is sitting at the bottom of a clear pool.

  • Variations: This method can be applied to various colors, such as Midori-dame (Green) or Ki-dame (Yellow).

Production Realities

  • Low Yield: A single 10-12 year old tree yields only about 200 grams of raw sap—barely enough to paint ten small soup bowls.

  • Precision: Each layer is only about 0.03mm thick and requires approximately seven hours to dry under specific temperature and humidity conditions.

  • Origin Matters: Only Japanese Urushi can be refined into the high-quality Suke-Urushi required for translucent finishes. Lacquer harvested from China or Vietnam typically remains black and cannot achieve the same level of clarity.

Funny and not too harsh
Format: Hardcover
This is a funny little book that even most religious people should be able to enjoy. It doesn't go too far in poking fun. A highlight is the peek inside Flanders' head where one can inspect the varioius compartments of his mind. --Guy P.
