COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Interacting with People with Hearing Disorders course. This program will equip you with the knowledge, communication strategies, and practical awareness required to interact respectfully, confidently, and effectively with individuals who experience hearing disorders. You will explore how hearing works, how hearing disorders develop, how they affect daily life, and what tools, supports, and communication methods can strengthen inclusion and understanding. This course also examines the technologies and assistive approaches that enable people with hearing loss to communicate and participate fully in social, educational, and professional settings.

This course begins by examining what hearing disorders mean, the two main kinds of hearing loss, and how hearing works within the human auditory system. You will explore the different types of hearing disorders and how the ear transforms sound waves into meaningful sound. This section examines the functions of the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear, why humans have two ears, and how the hearing system operates as a whole. You will also explore conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss, and mixed hearing loss, including their common causes. This section also explains how the hearing system helps keep the body balanced through the vestibular system, explores concepts such as being “hard of hearing,” and examines phantom noise (tinnitus) and its impact on daily functioning. You will then explore the different types of hearing tests, including the auditory brainstem response test, and the common symptoms that indicate hearing loss.

A further part of this course explores the historical context of hearing disorders. You will examine the history of hearing disorders in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, followed by the developments of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and how knowledge, social attitudes, and communication approaches have evolved. This section also explores the use of silent signals in sports, how people live with hearing disorders, the threshold of “how loud is too loud,” and modern methods of hearing protection.

The next learning area focuses on supports, technologies, and communication aids. You will explore various electronic helpers, including assistive listening devices, the role of animal helpers such as hearing assistance dogs, and strategies for protecting hearing in daily life. This section explains how automatic speech recognition systems work, the popular types of hearing aids, and specialised devices such as CROS aids, bone conduction aids, cochlear implants, and brainstem implants. These technologies illustrate the broad range of supports available to enhance communication and independence for people with differing types of hearing loss.

The final learning area focuses on communicating effectively with people with hearing loss. You will explore practical ways to communicate clearly, respectfully, and inclusively, including how to modify speech, body language, and environmental conditions. This section also outlines the Do’s and Don’ts when meeting or interacting with people with hearing disorders, helping you build confidence and ensuring that communication is comfortable, constructive, and empowering for everyone involved.

By the end of this course you will be able to understand how hearing works, recognise the types and causes of hearing disorders, apply communication strategies that support inclusion, use appropriate technologies and aids, and engage with people with hearing loss in ways that promote dignity, clarity, and effective interaction.

The best no show socks
The only no show socks I have ever found that do not slide down. These are very comfortable and the extra tab on the back provides comfort by keeping shoes from rubbing the back of your foot. The top of the sock also comes up high enough to cushion the top of your foot all while still remaining hidden while wearing tennis shoes or even with my hey dudes.

Good Product
Size: 3 Panel-102'', Color: Beige
I got these dividers for outdoor use for some privacy from neighbors. They arrived quickly and were easy to set up. They look good, and though the legs don’t offer stability against any amount of wind—which I expected as it wasn’t advertised for outdoor use—all it took was placing a cinder block on the feet to hold it up right. Coverage is good, it’s easy to fold and move as needed, and it’s light weight. All in all a decent product. I will caution the purchase of “used like-new,” as both of the dividers I ordered were previously returned items, and one came missing a cap, instructions were not included, and the poles were all mixed up and not properly labeled. If I had not ordered a second divider (which did include the instructions) I would have had a much harder time figuring out which pieces were which and how to put them together.
