Historic Map : Valentijn Map of Malaysia and Sumatra (Singapore), 1727, Vintage Wall ArtPossibly the most beautiful printed map of Malay ever made, this is a superb example of Francois Valentijn's 1726 map of Malaya (Malaysia and Singapore) and Sumatra. Oriented to the east, Valentijn's spectacular map covers from the Island of Junsalan (Penang Prince of Wales Island Pulu Pinang) south as far as the Straits of Sunda and west to Atsjien (Banda Aceh) at the western tip of Sumatra. Possibly the most beautiful printed map of Malay ever made, this is a superb example of Francois Valentijn's 1726 map of Malaya (Malaysia and Singapore) and Sumatra. Oriented to the east, Valentijn's spectacular map covers from the Island of Junsalan (Penang / Prince of Wales Island / Pulu Pinang) south as far as the Straits of Sunda and west to Atsjien (Banda Aceh) at the western tip of Sumatra. It extends eastwards to the Anambas Islands and the Bangka-Belitung Islands. The cartographer identifies various polities as well as numerous coastal settlements and cities. Topography is rendered in profile and limited submarine detail is presented in the Strait of Malacca.

Valentijn's map is one of the first published to present a sophisticated treatment of Malays and Sumatra, and the model upon which most subsequent maps through the late 18th century were based. This is one of the earliest maps to expound upon the indigenous polities of Malaya. Valentijn identifies seven separate kingdoms within the peninsula. The presentation thus represents a major change in Malayan politics following the Dutch capture of Portuguese Malacca in 1606. The Dutch forged a peaceful arrangement with the Sultan of Johor, leading to a time of general peace and prosperity in the region. This prosperity, combined with the decline of the Sunnite of Aceh in northern Sumatra, allowed for the rapid development and expansion of smaller polities throughout the peninsula, These include Johor, Perak, Pahang, Patani, Kedah, and Ligor - the latter two of which, as noted here, fell under the sway of Siam. Valentijn moreover, has recorded some 80 place names in Malaya alone, and far more in Sumatra, far more than any predecessor had attempted.

This map was issued in Amsterdam in Francois Valentijn's 1726 Oud en nieuw Oost-Indien . It was published by Joannes van Braam and Gerard onder de Linden, whose names appear on the imprint. Today this important map is very scarce.

Great home office dividers!
Size: 3-Panel
Needed something to create a home office that would stand on an uneven basement floor. These are the perfect solution! No prying eyes and only took me an hour to put up both sets by myself, pretty easy. They are completely opaque.

Fine Simple Product, Works as Advertised
Size: 3-Panel
Performs as advertised, a simple upright divider. I use it to mark my "office" space when working from home. Assembly was straightforward and well documented. One person can do it, but a second person can be helpful when sliding the fabric divider pieces onto their poles. Part quality is fine for the price point. The only mild annoyance is that the upright poles can start getting loose from the metal feet, and need to be retightened occasionally (Allen wrench is included, keep it handy for retightening). It's fairly lightweight and easy to reposition, but the feet are heavy enough to keep it steady once placed. All in all, a good product. I was pleased enough to buy a second one when my son wanted something to block sunlight from behind his computer desk.

Wobbly and Poor Design
Size: 1-Panel
Update: nope! Not worth the money. My cat simply brushed against the divider, and it fell, knocking breakable things over. Not safe! It serves it's purpose, but...the screws were basically glued to the packaging. It took me longer to get the screws out of the packaging than it did to put it together. The assembly was easy. I am not mechanically inclined by any means, but the instructions, despite being very hard to read (I have over 40 eyes), were pretty simple. Structurally, it is very wobbly. I think they should have designed it with a middle rod to keep it more stable. I find that the attachments to the rods are wobbly and should have been screwed rather than popped into an attachment hole without reinforcement. That would have also made the room divider more stable. I have cats, but the material is easy to clean. I took a damp cloth to it, and it came right off. As far as see-through...I think it does a great job of masking theO other side of the room.. I just wish it was a little longer and closer to the floor stand. I like that it came with extra parts. It's just a very cheaply made item, and I don't think the price for the item reflects how cheaply it is made, how wobbly and unstable it is, or the poor design.
