About the work

The photograph, Rosa, 2018, was taken by Prem Sahib in his studio, following a private screening of Rosa Von Praunheim’s 1971 film, It Is Not the Homosexual Who Is Perverse, But the Society in Which He Lives, on August 31st 2016.

The image depicts a set that was purpose-built for the audience, made to replicate an iconic moment in the film where a group of gay men lounge around on a mattress, discussing with frankness their experiences of life and sexuality. The image preserves the detritus of the social gathering, poignantly encapsulating a residual moment, both as monument and homage.

The size of the photograph, a standard print size of 9 x 13 cm, is important to Sahib. It is intimate in scale and references an old family photograph.

About the artist

Prem Sahib (b. 1982, London, UK) lives and works in London, UK.

Sahib’s artistic practice spans sculpture, painting, works on paper and performance, where he evokes the frailty of the human body though minimalist, or non-figurative techniques. His works can be seen as stand-ins for the body in which a trace is left behind of an intimate encounter based on autobiographical themes of desire, sexuality and community.

Whitechapel Gallery editions are generously donated by the artists. All proceeds from the sale of these works directly support our exhibition and education programmes. As is traditional in editions publishing, prices will rise as an edition starts to sell out.

For UK Customers, VAT is included in the price shown.

A Fun, Repetitive Book That Keeps Kids Engaged
Format: Board book
Dear Zoo has become a go-to read during playtime because the lift-the-flap feature keeps my baby actively involved. The simple storyline and repetition make it easy for young children to follow and anticipate what’s coming next. Pros: Lift-the-flap design encourages interaction and curiosity Repetitive text helps with early language development Short and engaging—great for babies and toddlers Sturdy board book holds up well Cons: Flaps can bend if handled roughly Very simple story, so older toddlers may outgrow it Conclusion: Dear Zoois a classic interactive book that works especially well for younger children.
