Pepino Melon (Solanum muricatum) is a striking fruiting shrub that brings a touch of the unusual to Cape Town gardens. With its glossy green leaves and delicate purple-and-white flowers, it produces oval fruits streaked with violet that ripen to a golden-yellow glow. Compact and perennial, it grows to about 1 m tall and wide, making it a perfect fit for smaller spaces or decorative containers.

Native to the cool highlands of South America, Pepino Melon has found a natural rhythm in the Western Cape’s climate. Flowering begins in spring (September–October), with fruits ready to harvest from late summer into autumn (February–April). The flavour is refreshingly sweet, somewhere between cantaloupe and pear, and the fruit can be enjoyed fresh, chilled, or even sliced into salads for a tropical twist.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • Exotic fruit with a unique flavour profile, sweet, refreshing, and versatile
  • Compact shrub suited to pots, raised beds, or sunny borders
  • Produces fruit reliably in Cape Town’s summer and autumn seasons
  • Attractive foliage and purple-streaked fruit add ornamental charm
  • Easy to grow and rewarding for adventurous gardeners
  • Adapts well to Cape Town’s mild winters and warm summers
  • A conversation piece that sets your garden apart

Planting & Care:

Choose a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained, compost-rich soil. Water regularly during Cape Town’s hot, dry summers, keeping the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and protect roots from heat. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage flowering and fruit set, and prune lightly after harvest to maintain a neat, bushy shape. Cape Town’s winter rains naturally refresh the plant, ensuring it’s ready for the next fruiting cycle.

Did You Know?

Pepino Melons can fruit within their very first year of planting. Unlike many fruiting shrubs that take seasons to establish, Pepinos reward Cape Town gardeners quickly, making them one of the fastest ways to enjoy homegrown exotic fruit.

very important book
Format: Kindle
If you are a victim of narcissistic abuse, It’s Not You could be a revolutionary, transformative, healing read. I just finished it and feel a deep gratitude to Ramani Durvasula, PhD for dedicating her life to sharing, as she calls it, “the story of the lion” not the hunter.

Better than canned air
I got this because I got sick or buying canned air. This will pay for itself in a short time if you use canned air often enough. Surprisingly powerful and can even blow some debris from the floor of my garage from a standing position. Different attachments for whatever your need it. Well worth it. As soon as I got it I cleaned all my electronics and was satisfied by how much dust flew out of them. Electronics can now breath again and are performing as they should and are not overheating.
