The word ikat comes from a Malay word meaning to tie. The yarn are being tied or bound first, as a form of resist, in the desired pattern and design and then dyed before being woven into textile. Hence the frayed look in the motifs typical of ikat fabriar
Hinggi are large blankets or men's waist cloth decorated with warp ikat used for special events or traditional ceremonies. In the past, only nobles had the right to use and wear such textiles. They are also used in customary exchanges.
Although Christianity is the dominant religion of the Sumbanese, many combine their faith with animise practice. They believe a person is able to acquire the spiritual powers and qualities of certain creatures when textiles displaying such motifs are worn.
*Rooster motif symbolizes the rooster’s morning crow, which represents awakening, the beginning of life, and leadership that is protective and nurturing.
*There are no lions in Sumba. But it is a widely used motif in Sumba ikat, symbolizing strength and status, a favourite symbol of leaders and nobilities. It is also an image derived from Dutch crest on medals and flags as symbol of alliance with foreign powers.
