This katana is suguha. The blade exhibits bold and elegant curvature, with a razor-sharp edge, showcasing Okimitsu’s mastery in traditional Japanese metallurgy.

This is a rare, traditionally-forged katana by Okimitsu, a highly skilled Japanese swordsmith from Nishinoshima, Oki District, Shimane Prefecture. Made in September 1942 (Shōwa 17), this sword is not a mass-produced military Guntō, but rather a Gendaitō, crafted using traditional Japanese swordsmithing techniques.

About the Swordsmith - Okimitsu

The maker of this blade, Okimitsu, was a government-appointed swordsmith during World War II. His real name was Hara Hiroshi, and he was a renowned master artisan. His achievements include:

  • Multiple awards from the Army Swordsmithing Technical Encouragement Association
  • Recognition as a member of the National Swordsmith Institute.
  • Holding the honorary title of Shōshō, marking him as one of the top swordsmiths of his time.
  • Apprenticeship under Hara Kakutarō, the first-generation Okimitsu.

Despite being made during wartime, this katana follows traditional forging techniques, ensuring its superior quality compared to standard military swords of the era.

Our grandson is beginner and we bought this set for him and he loves them. He’s 13 so he can’t drive the cart and these are light and easy to carry if he is without a cart.
