Set between January 1943 and June 1944, players take on the roles of either the Resistance or the Occupation, vying for control over regions, influence among the population, and ultimately the fate of France.
Gameplay revolves around a dynamic card system using three suits-the Resistance Cross, Victory Cross, and Iron Cross-each representing different resources and regional power bases. Players must skillfully choose when and where to act, whether conducting sabotage, recruiting support, or making arrests and exposing hidden cells. The game reflects the complex logistical challenges and strategic dilemmas both sides faced in real history.
A standout feature is the Resolution deck, which replaces dice with newspaper-themed cards used to determine the outcomes of actions. This design choice streamlines gameplay and emphasizes player decision-making over chance. In the Shadows also includes a solo mode where players lead Resistance operations against an automated Occupation opponent, with unique characters and narratives providing replayable, story-rich experiences.
