A kaleidoscopic journey through the secret history of hues—and the story of the obsessive genius behind the definitions of colors we use today, from the beloved author of Word by Word

begonia(n.): 3 -s : a deep pink that is bluer, lighter, and stronger than average coral (see coral 3b), bluer than fiesta, and bluer and stronger than sweet william — called also gaiety

What could "bluer than fiesta" possibly mean? While editing dictionaries for Merriam-Webster, Kory Stamper found herself drawn again and again to the whimsical color definitions in Webster’s Third New International Dictionary—especially when compared to the dry and impersonal entries that filled the rest of the volume. Stamper couldn’t help but wonder: Who was the voice behind these peculiar definitions?

Meet I. H. Godlove, an erratic but brilliant up-and-coming scientist who was one of the experts Merriam-Webster hired in 1930 to help revise the dictionary to reflect a rapidly modernizing world. His fascinating life mirrors the wild and winding journey that color science, color psychology, and color production took through the twentieth century. Stamper tracks these industries as they move into the atomic age and intertwine in strange and surprising ways, spanning two world wars and involving chemical explosions, an unexpected suicide, dramatic office politics, and an extraordinary love story.

Filled with captivating facts about color words and colors themselves—did you know that the word “puke” used to refer to a fashionable shade of reddish-brown before it was associated with vomit?—and fuelled by Stamper’s inexhaustible curiosity, True Color will transform the way you see the world, from black-and-white to Technicolor.

Beware of a sticky detail
I was looking for a way to organize my kitchen soap, sponges, and bottle brushes. This soap dispenser checked off all of my boxes with a nice stainless steel design making it a great addition to my kitchen counter. Question: after all of these positive aspects why only two stars? Answer: there is a sticker placed onto the dispenser that is so sticky that it is a formidable foe to remove (please review the attached photo). I liked this soap dispenser but the semi permanent sticker is the deal breaker to an otherwise nice product.

Keeps the Sink Area Neat and Organized
This has been really helpful for keeping my sink area clean. The soap dispenser pumps great! The sponge and brush holders keep everything off the counter so that really helps. The stainless steel looks nice and hasn’t shown any rust so far. It’s compact but holds everything I use daily, and cleaning it is easy. Great little upgrade if your sink area always feels messy. edited to add: took me about 45 minutes to finally get the sticker label off it was stuck directly on the stainless steel so I had to be really careful peelng it off

Stainless Steel 3-in-1 Sponge/Brush Holder with soap dispenser for Kitchen
This is an ideal item to organize your sink areas. Perfect for kichens but also for bathroom use. I love the built in soap dispenser. The one I currently have doesn't have a dispenser. And the big liquid soap container is always falling over. Mine irack is bigger but this one is more organied. Easy to clean. stainless steel. Smaller foot print so it sits right near the faucet easily. 7.3"L x 5.3"W x 6.5"H And, it has drainage holes in the front rack to keep your sponges fresh by quickly drying. I was going to put this in one of our smaller kitchens in a guest house, but I may just snag it for my kitchen! Good value. Priced right.
