This edition is dedicated to Henri Matisse (1869–1954), a pioneering force in modern art renowned for his bold use of color, fluid forms, and innovative techniques. Developed in collaboration with Maison Matisse, the collection draws inspiration from his revolutionary cut-outs and sculptural approach, translating his artistic language into refined design elements.

In homage to the visionary artistry of Henri Matisse, Montblanc presents the Masters of Art Homage to Henri Matisse Limited Edition 888—an exquisite writing instrument inspired by the artist’s pioneering use of color, pattern, and form. Raised in Bohain, a center of textile production, Matisse developed an early fascination with fabrics, which later became central to his artistic expression. This influence is captured in his iconic painting La Blouse Roumaine, the primary inspiration behind this edition.

The pen’s design reflects the texture of canvas, with the cap and upper barrel echoing its surface, while rich red and blue lacquer highlight the artwork’s dominant tones. Decorative details along the barrel and cone draw from the intricate patterns of the traditional blouse depicted in the painting.

Matisse’s mastery of line is honored through the engraving of his late drawing Large Face (Mask) (1952) on the handcrafted Au 750 gold nib. The cap’s softly sculpted form recalls the organic curves of his sculptures, while black onyx accents—set at the cone and surrounding the Montblanc emblem—add depth and contrast. The fluid, black lacquered clip is inspired by the leaf-like forms of his cut-out work The Sheaf.
