Understanding the Nabis Movement: Context and Influence

The Role of Symbolism in Nabis Art

The Nabis movement, emerging in the late 19th century, emphasized the use of symbolism and color to convey emotions. Artists like Sérusier sought to move beyond mere representation, using vibrant hues and abstract forms to express deeper meanings. This approach allowed them to explore the spiritual and emotional connections between nature and humanity.

Key Figures and Their Contributions to the Movement

Alongside Sérusier, notable figures such as Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard played crucial roles in the Nabis movement. They collectively challenged traditional artistic norms, focusing on personal expression and the beauty of everyday life. Their innovative techniques and philosophies laid the groundwork for modern art movements, influencing generations of artists.

Paul Sérusier: The Visionary Behind "The Times"

Biographical Insights: Sérusier's Artistic Journey

Paul Sérusier, born in 1864, was a pivotal figure in the Nabis movement. He studied under the renowned artist Gustave Moreau, who encouraged his exploration of color and form. Sérusier's journey led him to create "The Times," a masterpiece that encapsulates his artistic vision and the essence of the Nabis philosophy.

Influences and Inspirations: Nature and Spirituality

Sérusier drew inspiration from the natural world and his spiritual beliefs. He believed that art should reflect the beauty of nature and the human experience. This connection is evident in "The Times," where the changing seasons symbolize the passage of time and the cycles of life.

Unpacking the Composition of "The Times"

Color Palette: The Emotional Language of Colors

The color palette of "The Times" is rich and evocative. Sérusier used bold, saturated colors to convey emotions and moods. The vibrant greens, deep blues, and warm earth tones create a dynamic interplay that reflects the beauty and complexity of nature.

Brushwork Techniques: Impasto and Flatness

Sérusier employed unique brushwork techniques, including impasto, to add texture and depth to his painting. This method creates a tactile quality that invites viewers to engage with the artwork on a sensory level. The flatness in certain areas contrasts with the textured sections, enhancing the overall composition.

Symbolic Elements: Nature as a Reflection of Time

In "The Times," nature serves as a powerful symbol of the passage of time. The changing seasons depicted in the painting reflect life's cycles, from birth to decay. Sérusier's use of trees, flowers, and landscapes emphasizes the interconnectedness of all living things and the inevitability of change.

Thematic Exploration: Time and Change in "The Times"

Nature's Cycles: Seasons and Their Significance

The seasons in "The Times" represent more than just changes in weather; they symbolize the stages of life. Spring signifies renewal and hope, summer embodies vitality, autumn reflects maturity, and winter represents rest and reflection. This cyclical nature invites viewers to contemplate their own experiences with time.

Human Experience: The Intersection of Life and Nature

Sérusier's painting captures the profound relationship between humanity and nature. The figures in "The Times" interact with their environment, illustrating how human experiences are intertwined with the natural world. This theme resonates deeply, reminding us of our place within the larger tapestry of life.

Artistic Techniques: A Closer Look at Sérusier's Methods

Oil Painting Techniques: Layering and Texture

Innovative Use of Light: Creating Depth and Emotion

Light plays a crucial role in "The Times." Sérusier skillfully manipulated light to create a sense of depth and atmosphere. The interplay of light and shadow adds drama to the scene, evoking feelings of nostalgia and contemplation.

Comparative Analysis: "The Times" and Other Nabis Works

Contrasting with Fellow Nabis Artists: Vuillard and Bonnard

When compared to the works of Vuillard and Bonnard, "The Times" stands out for its bold use of color and symbolism. While Vuillard often focused on intimate domestic scenes and Bonnard explored the human figure, Sérusier's painting emphasizes the relationship between nature and time, showcasing his unique perspective within the Nabis movement.

Legacy and Impact: How "The Times" Influenced Future Art Movements

"The Times" has left a lasting legacy, influencing various art movements, including Expressionism and Fauvism. Great staple slip dress
This dress is more on the expensive side for a slip but it is SO cute and flattering. The low cut back is stunning and the material is soft and has some give to it. Super simple and sexy.

Loved them so much- Bought another pair
To start off, I have wide feet, ankles, and calves, because i'm a bit on the heavier side. Finding shoes that fit these requirements are difficult. The top part of the shoes that hug my legs are actually still a little roomy. Someone who has slightly larger lower legs can fit into these as well. If you have tiny legs, these shoes may be a little too loose, or if you don't have wide feet. These shoes are literally perfect for my feet and legs. The back unzips so I was able to get my feet into the shoes easily, and even wearing them I didn't feel like my toes were being squished. I ordered a size 10, and it is perfect length and width for my wide feet. Do note: My feet are wide enough to not fit in most shoes, but not too wide, you should pay attention to the measurements if you have wide feet. I was a little skeptical from a review of a woman who had her toes bleeding from these shoes, as I know that is often a problem for me with most shoes I wear. Generally I start bleeding in the back of my heel. So I was skeptical that these shoes would make me bleed. However, I was proven wrong. These are one of the only shoes i've worn that haven't rubbed my skin right off. I believe that has to do with the lovely height of the back, which prevents rubbing on the back of your heels, and the perfect width of the shoes. If your feet are too wide for these shoes, then you will probably bleed, but that's to be expected because the shoe does not fit you and that is often something that can happen with shoes that don't fit. I originally bought the green pair, because I loved the color, but then I loved the fit so much that I bought a second, black pair. These are one of the only shoes with heels I actually wear because they are more comfortable than most, and they're just adorable. I am not generally a high heel wearer, so I'm not used to walking with my heels elevated. Despite that, these shoes were fairly easy to walk in. They are my favorite pairs of heels. and I do highly recommend them. I will be buying more colors in the future, and I hope they will come out with more colors like brown and an aqua/blue shade.

Trying to get what's in picture
Size: 9, Color: Natural Nbpu
Amazon said my size was a 10. So i ordered a 10. Waaaay too long, wide big in general, and I have a wide foot so I was pleasantly surprised. Company did not offer any color in size 9.5 but according to their size guide I "might" fit into a 9! Again, pleasantly surprised that i totally did and even when I put in my "Dr. Scholl's" inserts, i have slight wiggle room for when feet swell. Overall I am happy with the shoe fit, comfortability and height...not that I'd wear these for more than 8 hrs., but comfy enough for a wedding or to wear to work when I have a "mostly office day" instead of out in the yard. HOWEVER... i loved the color and suede-ey look/feel pattern of the size 10. It was exactly as picture/info described. But I'm not sure what happened to the size 9? wth? Although i ORDERED exact same shoe/color but in smaller size...what I got was a much lighter color, and NOT the suede fabric...more nubuck. Bu inside of shoe had same info/tag as the 10. Really hoping that it was a packing/labeling error. Will try one more time to order the 9, in the same 'name' fabric. Fingers crossed that I get what I ordered/want. Otherwise it'll be a return and less stars.
