This is a one of a pair of spalted Beech Bird feeders I made a few weeks ago in this extraordinarily beautiful wood.

The first one was sold within a matter of a few minutes of me sharing it on The Natural Wood Company's social media pages last week, this one is now ready and up for grabs.

The perfect all year round gift for the bird lover and gardener.

Supplied with its own stainless steel hanging wire with clips, the feeder can be hung anywhere, the branch of a tree, as part of an already busy feeding station, or hanging quietly on a secluded balcony.

The bottom half of the feeder acts as a deep seed trough, and the slightly oversize top as a shelter, to keep the seed dry and allow small birds (Blue Tit's etc.) to actually get inside the feeder to graze at their leisure.

The feeder’s perfectly smooth round body suspended by the supplied 45cm thin wire makes it virtually impossible for squirrels to access the seed, it's actually satisfyingly funny to watch the squirrels puzzled faces as they try to get to the seed.

Our Bird feeders are also available in Oak available in four sizes: small, medium, large & extra large and look great hanging together as a set.

GIFT BOX OPTION:

If required, the feeders can be wrapped in tissue and packed in a beautiful made to measure gift box. The gift box is enclosed in a double thickness outer box, so on delivery all you have to do is remove the outer postal box and your gift is ready to give.

It’s turned from a locally sourced kiln dried spalted beach and finished using 4 coats of our secret recipe lacquer, then burnished to a smooth semi gloss finish, so it can stay out in all weathers all year round.

What is Spalting?

Many timbers can "spalt", but Beech is one of the most common.

Spalting is a term used to describe the process by which certain fungi grow on dead or fallen trees and, after colonising the wood by travelling up the wood from the ends of from broken off branches etc, leave a most attractive pattern. The process takes 2 to 3 years to reach the ideal stage to cut & season the timber.

The black lines you see are zones created by different species of fungi spores erecting barriers around their own territory! There are primary colonisers who come first and establish territories and then have to defend them against secondary colonisers who are only able to colonise the wood only because the primary colonisers have changed the ph of the wood and its structure. Tiny microscopic armies if you like!  If left unchecked, eventually the whole tree is eaten & consumed, part of nature’s process of dealing with dead & fallen trees.

Please be assured that once seasoned and kiln dried, the fungi spores are inactive.

All the timber we use is the very best locally sourced we can find and is always obtained sustainably, for example, some pieces are crafted from fallen or storm damaged trees on local private estates. It’s then air-and or kiln-dried for at least 12 months before being used to make a beautifully functional product. We also try to make sure all our packaging is made from natural, sustainable materials, using recycled card and paper whenever possible. Please note that The Natural Wood Company bird feeders were designed and refined over several years before they were marketed. All four sizes are designed to not only be a beautiful addition to your garden, but to work well as bird feeders, and they all do. All birds can feed from the side of all three sizes but small birds i.e. Blue tits, sparrows & finches etc. will actually get inside the medium and large & extra large feeders, the small feeder is designed to allow the birds to feed from the side, however if adjusted, tits and sparrows can and do get inside.
