About the work

UK based artist Peter Liversidge begins the plans for each of his exhibitions at his own kitchen table, typing proposals on an old typewriter. The resulting pages, complete with typos and hand-written notes, form an array of possible, and sometimes impossible, propositions for artworks, which collectively form the initial piece in every Liversidge exhibition. For the Whitechapel Gallery group show Spirit of Utopia, featuring ten artists and collectives from around the world and bringing together an assembled exploration of the 'what if' scenario, Liversidge has created this limited edition, Proposal for Whitechapel Editions, as a diptych: part manually type-written, part silver-leafed, each proposal has been framed by Darbyshire Framers.

About the artist

Born in Lincoln in 1973, Liversidge now lives and works in London. His work is held in numerous collections, including the British Council Collection, the British Library, Victoria and Albert Museum and Tate Gallery Archive.

He has shown extensively in both the UK and abroad, holding solo shows at the Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh (2013), the Bloomberg Space, London (2009), Sean Kelly Gallery, New York (2011) and the Centre d'Art Santa Monica, Barcelona (2008). Liversidge has participated widely in group shows at the Whitechapel Gallery, London (2011), Tate Liverpool (2009), Spike Island, Bristol (2012) and The Drawing Room, London (2013).
