Bromelain is a general name used to refer to several enzymatic proteins produced by plants from the bromeliad (pineapple) family, including edible pineapple.

Bromelain digests protein, so it works analogously to our own digestive enzymes, generally called proteolytic enzymes. Plants produce proteolytic enzymes to destroy the larvae of parasitic insects, which are mainly composed of proteins.

However, taking a dose of bromelain by a person makes it easier for him to digest the proteins he eats. These properties of bromelain are used in the nutrition of people with deficiencies of their own digestive enzymes (e.g. seniors) and athletes, especially those from strength disciplines, who consume huge daily portions of proteins.
