The design draws its direct inspiration from the elegant, cultivated forms of the Japanese Bonsai tree. The Dormeuse is defined by its organic, asymmetric shape, designed to accommodate the body in various positions for ultimate relaxation. Its soft, rounded volumes evoke the smooth lines of a miniature tree or large, polished stone. The piece is supported by a single, prominent, cylindrical base—the "trunk"—that gives the illusion of a floating body. This base is often finished in a contrasting or dark color, highlighting the piece's sculptural nature. The generous, inviting upholstered body (the "foliage") stands in sharp contrast to the precise geometry of the base, creating a balanced and harmonious tension.
