COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the course Preventing Social Isolation in Disability Support. This program is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to address and mitigate social isolation among individuals with disabilities, promoting their overall wellbeing and community engagement.

We begin with an introduction to social isolation, defining it and exploring the different types. We will discuss the various causes and contributing factors that lead to social isolation and examine its impact on individuals and communities, highlighting why it is crucial to address this issue in disability support settings.

Next, we delve into understanding social isolation specifically within disability support. We will explore the prevalence of social isolation among individuals with disabilities, its psychological and emotional effects, and the broader impact it has on their lives and social networks.

Risk factors and assessment are key to identifying and supporting at-risk individuals. This section covers how to identify those at risk, conduct thorough social isolation assessments, and document and monitor these risks effectively.

Understanding Australian legal and ethical considerations is essential for support workers. We will discuss duty of care and support, privacy and confidentiality, and the relevant ethical frameworks and regulations that guide practice in disability support.

Person-centred approaches are fundamental to effective support. We will explore how to develop individualised support plans, involve families and carers in the support process, and promote autonomy and choice for individuals with disabilities.

Effective communication strategies are crucial for building rapport and trust. This section covers techniques for effective communication, overcoming communication barriers, and ensuring that support workers can connect meaningfully with those they support.

Building social connections is a critical component of preventing social isolation. We will discuss how to facilitate social interactions, engage individuals in community programs, and support their participation in group activities.

The role of disability professionals is multifaceted. We will explore the importance of training and professional development, best practices and responsibilities, and the necessity of self-care to manage burnout.

Collaborating with families and carers is vital for comprehensive support. This section covers effective communication strategies with families, engagement strategies, and how to support carers in their roles.

Mental health and wellbeing are closely linked to social isolation. We will discuss how to recognise mental health issues, provide emotional support, and refer individuals to mental health services when necessary.

Activity planning and implementation are essential for engaging individuals and promoting social interaction. We will cover how to design inclusive activities, adapt them to individual needs, and evaluate their effectiveness.

Monitoring and evaluation are key to ensuring the success of your strategies. This section focuses on setting measurable goals, regular monitoring and feedback, and adjusting strategies based on outcomes to continuously improve your approach.

Deeply insightful, thought provoking & right on
Format: Hardcover
In traveling to Thailand years ago I was pleased to learn that the country forbids westerners from taking statues of the Buddha home. The country feared it could end up in an over priced, westernized yoga studio or become a lawn ornament. And I was shocked when a friend told me that “namaste” was a term reserved for one’s elders. You can say it to your grandma but it’s inappropriate to say in yoga class. Liz Bucar’s book sheds light and brings awareness at such a ripe time in our global cultural awaking. As a long time yoga practitioner I wish this book existed years ago. I look forward to sharing it with my community.

So helpful
Format: Hardcover
This is a book that will help you think through the misappropriating of religion in most every aspect of life. I have learned so much from this work and believe that you will as well. Written in an engaging, easy to read style, this work is accessible by anyone who is looking to be more intentional in their understanding of others, their beliefs, culture and religion. This kind of information make navigating the world a safer journey for all of us.

Thoughtful and honest
Format: Kindle
I am so glad I read this! I've heard the term "cultural appropriation" many more times than I can count, but I hadn't thought about it in the context of religion. Bucar's writing is so engaging, and the book is a great blend of narrative non-fiction and theory. I couldn't put it down! Highly recommend.

An important and interesting read; well written and researched
Format: Hardcover
The author uses personal experiences to illustrate and enliven the text. Ms. Bucar challenges us to look at our own reactions, thoughts and practices. I would recommend this book for discussion at my book club.

Not what I was hoping for
Format: Paperback
I've been interested in the topic of religious appropriation ever since I saw my non-Tibetan neighbor hang Tibetan prayer flags on his front porch. And when I lived in Japan, I saw that non-Christian Japanese appropriated all of the trappings of Western Christian wedding ceremonies. So I had high hopes for this book. But it reads like a very looooong, and also very academic sermon on the evils of capitalism, western hegemony, and other such terms. There is not an ounce of humor in any of this book.
