The C-30 is a high-performance CD player from Onkyo's Icon Series (Osaka, Japan), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Added to the Icon Series lineup in October 2025, the C-30 is engineered for discerning listeners who want to extract the full resolution from their CD collection. It features Onkyo's proprietary VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuit) for pulse noise elimination, a 24-bit / 192 kHz DAC for high-resolution digital-to-analogue conversion, and a high-precision ±10 PPM clock for exceptional timing accuracy and stable stereo imaging. RCA analogue, optical, and coaxial digital outputs provide effortless integration with high-end amplifiers and separate DACs. A blast-finished aluminium front panel reduces resonance, and the C-30 supports CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3, and WMA disc formats alongside a headphone output with dedicated level control for private listening.

VLSC Technology and the 24-bit DAC

Vector Linear Shaping Circuit (VLSC) is Onkyo's patented proprietary technology developed to address a specific problem inherent in digital audio playback: pulse noise. Conventional digital-to-analogue conversion generates high-frequency switching noise at the DAC output as part of the conversion process. If left unaddressed, this noise re-enters the analogue stage and adds a subtle grain or harshness to the output signal. VLSC uses advanced signal-shaping algorithms in the post-DAC analogue filter to suppress this pulse noise before it reaches the output terminals, resulting in a cleaner and more transparent analogue output. The C-30's 24-bit/192 kHz DAC resolves digital audio at well above the 16-bit/44.1 kHz standard of the CD format, providing greater mathematical precision during the digital-to-analogue conversion process. The RCA analogue output delivers 2.0 V rms at 540 ohms, a standard output level compatible with any integrated amplifier or preamplifier's line input. Total harmonic distortion measures 0.004% and the signal-to-noise ratio is 103 dB, both excellent figures for a CD player at this level.

High-Precision Clock, Resonance Control, and Build Quality

Timing accuracy is critical in CD playback: any jitter in the clock signal that drives the DAC introduces timing errors that manifest as a loss of stereo focus and a softening of transient attack. The C-30's ±10 PPM high-precision clock minimises this jitter, producing a more focused and stable stereo image and improving the sense of instrument placement within the soundstage. The blast-finished aluminium front panel is designed with resonance reduction in mind, providing the rigidity to damp mechanical vibration from the CD transport mechanism before it can modulate the audio circuitry. This attention to vibration control is carried throughout the C-30's chassis construction, following the same philosophy applied across the Icon Series in the P-80, M-80, and A-50 components. The C-30 accepts CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3, and WMA format discs, covering both commercial recordings and home-burned CDs of digital music files. Random, Memory (program), and Repeat playback modes are supported.

Connectivity and System Integration

The C-30 provides three output options for flexible system integration. The RCA analogue output connects directly to any integrated amplifier or preamplifier's line input. The optical (TOSLINK) digital output and coaxial (RCA) digital output both carry 16-bit/44.1 kHz PCM to an external DAC, allowing the C-30 to function as a CD transport feeding a higher-specification outboard converter such as those built into the P-80 or A-50. A front-panel 6.35 mm headphone output with a dedicated level control enables private listening at any volume without interrupting the main output. The C-30 is a natural source component partner for the Onkyo P-80 Network Preamplifier and M-80 Power Amplifier, or for use with the A-50 Network Integrated Amplifier, completing a fully Onkyo Icon Series two-channel system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Onkyo C-30?

The Onkyo C-30 is a single-disc CD player from the Icon Series, featuring Onkyo's proprietary VLSC pulse noise reduction, a 24-bit/192 kHz DAC, a high-precision ±10 PPM clock, a blast-finished aluminium front panel for vibration control, and RCA analogue, optical, and coaxial digital outputs. It supports Audio CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3, and WMA disc formats, and includes a headphone output with dedicated level control. It is available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada.

How does the Onkyo C-30 compare to the Cambridge Audio AXC35 or Marantz CD60?

The C-30 differentiates itself from the Cambridge Audio AXC35 and Marantz CD60 primarily through its VLSC pulse noise reduction circuitry, which has no direct equivalent in either Cambridge Audio or Marantz at this price level. The ±10 PPM clock precision addresses jitter more aggressively than the standard oscillator implementations found in the AXC35, and the C-30's 24-bit/192 kHz DAC exceeds the 24-bit/192 kHz capability of the Marantz CD60 in the same nominal resolution tier. Providing both optical and coaxial digital outputs is a practical advantage over competitors that include only one digital output type, and the blast-finished aluminium front panel construction approach is consistent with the C-30's position as a component of the Icon Series rather than a standalone budget player.

What is VLSC and how does it improve CD playback?

VLSC, or Vector Linear Shaping Circuit, is Onkyo's patented proprietary post-DAC signal processing technology. During the digital-to-analogue conversion process, the DAC's switching architecture generates high-frequency pulse noise at its output. This noise accompanies the audio signal into the analogue output stage and, if not removed, adds a subtle but audible grain to the sound that reduces transparency and naturalness. VLSC applies advanced shaping algorithms to the analogue output of the DAC to identify and suppress this pulse noise specifically, leaving the musical signal intact. The result is a cleaner, quieter analogue output with lower effective noise floor and a more natural rendering of low-level detail in recordings.

Can the C-30 be used as a CD transport feeding an external DAC?

Yes, both the optical TOSLINK output and the coaxial RCA digital output transmit 16-bit/44.1 kHz PCM from the CD transport directly to an external DAC. This allows the C-30 to be paired with the digital input of a higher-specification external converter, such as those built into the Onkyo P-80 Network Preamplifier or A-50 Network Integrated Amplifier. Using the C-30 as a transport in this way means the external DAC handles conversion rather than the onboard 24-bit circuit, which may be preferred by listeners with a high-specification outboard DAC in their system.

What disc formats does the C-30 support?

The C-30 plays standard Audio CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs containing either standard audio recordings or MP3 and WMA music files. This covers the full range of commercially pressed CDs as well as home-burned discs of digital music files, making it compatible with the CD collections that most listeners have accumulated over the years regardless of format.

Where can I buy the Onkyo C-30 in Toronto or Canada?

The Onkyo C-30 is available at Vinyl Sound, an authorised Onkyo dealer in Toronto, Canada. Vinyl Sound carries the complete Onkyo Icon Series including the C-30, P-80, M-80, and A-50, and can advise on building a complete Icon Series two-channel system or integrating the C-30 into an existing hi-fi setup.

Great privacy room divider
Color: Black, Size: 6 Panel, Color: Black, Size: 6 Panel
I got this room divider for our game room that shares the garage/laundry room, to separate the spaces. I was happy that it was relatively easy to put together in less than an hour with nothing more than a screwdriver (provided) although I used a small handheld drill. The instructions were pretty straightforward and easy to understand as everything was labeled. I have 2 small grandkids at home running around while I put this together so my timeline to completion might be longer than others. It recommends 2 people to assemble, but I was able to complete alone in about 40 minutes total and as I said I used a small handheld drill, (although it does come with a small Philips screwdriver) which is the only tool you need for assembly. The first two panels took me about 20 minutes but the other 4 were simple repeats after the initial 2. After all 6 panels were assembled the plastic clips to piece them together were literally a "SNAP" to put on. The poles are made of metal and the panels are made of a very sturdy almost canvas like fabric. When held up to the light not a lot shined through so very good for privacy. You can snap them together in sections and have 2 separate panels of 3 or what ever configuration you want. They are easy to move and bend around furniture or other obstacles, also fold flat together if you need to put them aside for storage. This worked out just as we had planned, very easy to move around when needed and I am very happy with this product. I loved how simple it was to put together, easy instructions, and the durability and functionality of it.

Decent for the price. Instructions suck but most people should be able to figure it out. More below.
Color: Black, Size: 6 Panel, Color: Black, Size: 6 Panel
SUMMARY: 3 stars from me because it's firmly average. It's fine for the price. Assembly and materials are alright but I can see some caveats depending on your circumstances. Assembly instructions do a subpar job of pointing out some details. ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS: Maybe it's because I'm autistic and/or building model kits and assembling stuff is my jam, but I honestly thought people were exaggerating when they were complaining about the instructions and I'd be able to flex my ~superior assembly skills.~ I was wrong! These instructions genuinely suck, and whoever is responsible for making them should be ashamed. The instructions do a poor job of calling out some details regarding orientation of parts, and some of the images do not actually match the physical parts. For example, it does not really outline the assembly of the end panels clearly, and I can see someone accidentally using the wrong poles. I've drawn over a photo to show what you should do to try and make it clearer. Additionally, the manual shows a flathead screw for bolting the feet into position, but the actual screw is not a flathead. It also does not point out the counterbore, so if you aren't paying attention you may put the foot pads onto the wrong side of the foot. It's also missing the fact that you need to use another one of the plastic pieces when you finish assembling a panel. ACTUAL ASSEMBLY & MATERIALS: To their credit, all of my bags were clearly labeled. The assembly process wasn't difficult. It's mostly just tedious and requires a fair amount of space. I was able to assemble it by myself without any real difficulty. However, the way it's assembled means two things. One, the fabric parts aren't removable without disassembly. So if you want to use this in an environment where they would require cleaning, I would seriously recommend looking for another option. Or, you could buy this just to use the frame pieces and then somehow buy or make your own fabric pieces designed to be removable with velcro or something. Two, because of the materials I really don't have a lot of faith in this thing surviving disassembly and reassembly. Like a lot of sorta-cheap-but-convenient furniture, it uses those spring-button connections and plastic inserts with self-tapping screws. Those things are not really meant to be disassembled and rethreaded. It also relies a lot on the tension of the poles and the fabric to keep everything rigid and squared, which I think puts a lot of pressure on the aforementioned buttons, plastic inserts, and the hollow metal rods. So I feel like that will also cause issues with disassembly and reassembly. Basically once this thing is assembled, it's not really meant to be disassembled. The best you can do is spot-clean the fabric if you need to. Speaking of the fabric, I didn't see any labels on them or anything in the manual that says what they are, but they feel like some kind of polyester. They generate static electricity pretty easily, and pet hair and debris sticks easily. So that's another downside of them not being easily removable. For the most part it does seem pretty stable. The poles seem to be pretty uniform in length so they're all making contact with my floor. Obviously this isn't structural so it shouldn't be supporting anything, but the two main feet seem to be doing fine with keeping this thing upright. CLOSING THOUGHTS: Really, it's fine for what it is, but it could be better in a lot of little ways and the substandard quality of the instructions just seems unprofessional to me, which is why I'm being so harsh with my rating. Depending on your needs and environment you may want to consider a different option. Preferably one that is made to be disassembled with better materials, and/or one with fabric pieces made to be removed easily.

Not as it seems
Color: Black, Size: 6 Panel
these are awful... Each individual panel is fine, but when you put it together it can barely stand up, and the clips that hold it together keep popping off. Steer clear of this item.
