About the work

Emma Talbot has created Animal Guide, 2022 especially for Whitechapel Gallery to accompany the exhibition Max Mara Art Prize for Women Emma Talbot The Age / L’Età 30 June – 4 September 2022

Talbot’s edition derives from a drawing by the artist. Created as a silkscreen print onto Khadi paper - a natural handmade paper made from bark - Animal Guide, 2022 depicts a memory of a walk taken by the artist over Mount Etna, Sicily - when staying on the permaculture site.

The walk began at 5am and as the group started to climb the volcano a pale wild dog joined them and led the way to the top. For Talbot, who is interested in our connections with nature, being in this strange, black volcanic space - with craters, rock hard lava and burned trees from previous eruptions, accompanied by a very gentle animal was a very moving experience. The dog, an ‘animal guide’ stopped and waited at points and stayed as they sat for something to eat, watching the sunrise.

About the artist

Emma Talbot (b. 1969, Stourbridge) lives and works in London. Working in drawing, painting, animation and sculpture Talbot often articulates internal narratives as visual poems or associative ruminations, based on her own experience, memories and psychological projections. Incorporating her own writing and references to other literary and poetic sources, Talbot’s work considers complex issues such as feminist theory and storytelling; ecopolitics and the natural world; and pertinent questions regarding our shifting relationships to technology, language and communication.

I was hesitant to order this online but oh my GAWD, it's so much better than I thought it'd be. Soft and warm, and cozy. Far exceeded my expectations, and really took the Eames to the next level. Highly recommend.

Very nice quality

I ordered three of these, and they arrived promptly and very well packaged in a vacuum seal pack. Once you pull them out, shake them and fluff them a little bit they lose their wrinkles pretty quickly. They seem to be very good quality and are authentically sheepskin. The “white” has a tiny little bit of a yellow undertone, which is what I expected since it’s basically a dyed sheep skin. I would call the white color “natural” rather than white white. They are very thick and were a good price. I ordered two of the three foot-long hides and one 6ft foot hide. One of the hides had a slight odor to it that reminded me a little bit of eggs. It’s been laying on my bench all night and 24 hours later there is no smell. The other two hides had zero smell at all. I think it’s just a little leftover chemical smell from the treatment of the hide when they get it ready. It wasn’t overwhelming or overpowering. If you’re looking for the ultimate SUPER plush sheepskin, I recommend the Overland Sheepskin Company. However, for what I need these for which is just something to throw over my dining room table bench for a little cushion and aesthetics. It’s absolutely perfect and the right price point.
