This is paint protection film, not vinyl. So while the color is doing the work on top, the film underneath is taking the hits your clear coat would otherwise eat. Rock chips, road grit, light scratches, swirl marks from washing. You get a new color and a real shield in one layer, and the paint you are covering stays factory fresh underneath.
