M5 Pro or M5 Max — which should I get?
M5 Pro covers most pro workflows: 4K/6K video editing, software development, photography, music production. M5 Max is for heavy 3D rendering, 8K video, large-scale AI/ML model training, and scientific computing where the extra GPU cores and higher memory ceiling (up to 128 GB) directly translate to faster work. For most pros, M5 Pro is the better value.
14" Pro or base M5 Pro 14"?
If you don't need 24 GB+ RAM or M5 Pro/Max-level GPU performance, the standard M5 14" Pro saves significant money while keeping the same XDR display, ports, and chassis. Pick this M5 Pro/Max version if you specifically need the extra cores and memory ceiling for video, 3D, or AI workloads.
Will this run hot during heavy work?
The 14" has a smaller thermal envelope than the 16" — sustained peak performance under heavy loads is shorter before fans ramp up. For brief bursts of heavy work, fine. For multi-hour renders or compiles, the 16" sustains performance longer. Fans are audible under sustained load but quieter than typical Windows workstations.
How much memory should I configure?
24 GB minimum for any pro use. 36-48 GB sweet spot for video editing and music production. 64 GB+ for 3D, large datasets, multiple Docker containers, or running local LLMs. Memory cannot be upgraded later — buy what you'll need over the next 5 years.
What about ports for travel?
Three Thunderbolt 5, HDMI, SDXC, and MagSafe 3. SDXC slot eliminates the need for a card reader dongle when offloading from cameras. HDMI direct connects to most projectors and hotel TVs without an adapter. MagSafe 3 charging keeps the Thunderbolt ports free for accessories.

Cheap and unstable

Although this has nothing to do with the product, it arrived a day later than previously stated. Making me have to create a makeshift room divider the day it was actually needed. When the product arrived it arrived in a box that showed no evidence of damage. Once opened, divider was found inside a plastic cover. Great protector for dust or scratching. The divider was fully assembled so there was nothing for me to do but remove it from packaging and use it where needed. After further inspection the divider was not only cheap and flimsy looking it was absolutely unstable. It would wobble and appears to have been assembled in a rush making some panels crooked. I noted significant damage to the bottom portion of some of the panels both front and back. It does not feel like an item worth the price. The color is as advertised and the product had no smell. The sizing was accurate.
