Comprehensive Unit

Grade Level: High School – Community College
Includes curriculum unit + 2 CD-ROMs

One of the defining aspects of terrorism is that it is a resort to violence that circumvents the democratic process. How, then, do liberal democratic governments fight terrorism within their existing governmental constructs?

In the latter half of the twentieth century, and especially since the attacks of September 11, 2001, sub-state terrorism has emerged as one of the most prominent security concerns for the United States. The war on terrorism dominates U.S. diplomatic, foreign affairs, military, law enforcement, and judicial discourse. To make effective decisions on how to wage the war on terror, Americans must think critically about what terrorism is and what policies best prevent future terrorist acts. They must also ask themselves what, if anything, they are willing to trade to gain security from future terrorist acts.

Such an analysis begins with a simple question: What is terrorism? Upon inspection, no definition seems adequate; terrorism is a strategy that takes many forms and is committed by many types of actors, and there is vast disagreement on what constitutes a terrorist act. Seeking a definition nonetheless yields important clues to the nature of terrorist threats.

Some measures that liberal democracies use to respond to terrorism, such as freezing the financial assets of proven terrorist organizations, garner wide support and generate little controversy. Other measures are more contentious, both in terms of their effectiveness in combating terrorism and their effect on civil liberties. The notion of a tradeoff between liberty and security is often invoked, implying that some of society's freedoms must be curtailed or suspended to eliminate a terrorist threat. This leads to discussion over "finding the balance between freedom and security," but this is not the only way to think about the dilemma. Some argue there can be no freedom unless there is security; that is, true freedom can only be achieved when we can live without the fear of an imminent terrorist strike. Others make the opposite argument: to have security, we must have freedom. In other words, protecting individual rights domestically and promoting them abroad is the best way to ensure our security because it removes the grievances that cause terrorism in the first place. How, then, should a liberal, democratic society respond to terrorism? There are no simple answers to those complex topics, but this unit provides students with the background and tools needed to consider these important questions critically.

Security, Civil Liberties, and Terrorism is based on lectures from a Stanford University course taught by a scholar on counterterrorism. The unit consists of the lectures, included on CD-ROM, and four lessons of activities and readings that supplement the lectures. In the first lesson, students learn how difficult it is to define terrorism and the complexity of labeling someone a terrorist. Lesson Two gives students background into the nature of liberal, democratic states and explains the centrality of civil liberties in such states. In Lesson Three, students participate in a simulation of a terrorist threat and evaluate specific counterterrorist measures, focusing on the USA PATRIOT Act passed after the September 11th attacks. Finally, Lesson Four encourages students to think of counterterrorism in larger terms. Students learn three models for responding to terrorism and are challenged to draft their own counterterrorism legislation. Each lesson contains a variety of group activities and numerous suggestions for assessment.

Impressive Smart Glasses for Recording and Everyday Use – Very Cool Tech
Color: Matte Black, Clear Lenses, Size: Standard
I picked up the Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) Wayfarer mainly for hands-free recording and the AI features, and overall it’s a really cool piece of wearable tech. The design looks just like normal Ray-Bans, so they don’t feel gimmicky or overly “techy” when wearing them in public. The camera quality is surprisingly good for glasses. Video and photos come out clear, and it’s incredibly convenient being able to record exactly what you’re seeing without pulling out your phone. Audio capture is also solid, and the open-ear speakers work well for calls and quick media playback. Battery life has been noticeably improved compared to earlier smart glasses, and they’ve been reliable during regular use. Pairing and app integration were straightforward, and once set up, everything just works in the background. My only real disappointment is that there’s no integrated screen or display. For a device that can see what you see and has AI capabilities, having some kind of built-in visual feedback would have made the experience even more powerful. That said, as a recording device and AI-assisted wearable, these are genuinely impressive. If you want discreet, hands-free video capture in a stylish form factor, the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer is a very unique and well-executed smart device.

Not Perfect but Nice 👋
Color: Shiny Black, Green Lenses, Size: Large
Looks like regular sunglasses. 🤙 The AI is pretty basic. The responses are basic. Battery life is fairly good and the case as a portable charger extremely cool. Why did I get these? FOR THE CAMERA. The video recording is good. Good picture quality and this is the only camera glasses with image stabilization. When manufacturers make wearables recording video image stabilization is a must. Here its good. The footage is not shaky. But this coolness is only available in 1080p even though this records 2k or 2.7k. The app works fairly good but a tiny bit finicky as videos are not always loading to your gallery on phone or app automatically. The app in general is cool in creating some videos but again basic and limited with restrictions. The thing I don't like is connecting to an app which all these companies do to grab your data. Seems to be more about the app than the product. They only things that bug me about this is the 5min recording limit and the flashing light that is a distraction to the person being filmed. There are no blinking lights on our cellphones when recording. You can turn off LED blinking lights on all cameras but here they claim some privacy issues. When in public there is no right to privacy. When in private property and you suspect anyone recording with anything and you don't want it then say so other than than that there are cameras everywhere. They can record us but we can't record them? We don't need the blinking light and we need longer record times. I would like a seperate SD slot so I don't have to connect to my phone all the time to pull footage. These aren't waterproof so... This is a quality product with good audio and video. Interested in any updates to turn off the blinking LED and recording time extensions.

Color: Matte Black, Clear Lenses, Size: Standard
Bought these for my daughter that is a content creator.. she does cooking and food reviews.. She absolutely loves these glasses!!!! They aloud her to free up her hands and not have to worry about holding her phone or using a tripod as much.. the video and picture quality is great.. I've heard her both listen to music and talk on the phone with them. They also look great on her. She is going to add her prescription lenses to them.. These meta gen 2 glasses are pricey ($322 plus tax on sale).. But if you creat content even at the regular price its a no brainer..

I use them daily
Color: Matte Black, Transitions Grey Lenses, Size: Standard
Enjoying arguing with the Meta AI, which is often wrong until you point it toward a current source of info. Bought them for the headphones, which, like the Xreal AR Glasses. Have an open air implementation that allows hearing stuff around you but playing music others don't hear. And the sound while having little bass, is quite good. The 3k hand free photo and video camera is a bonus, but only shoots in vertical, a stupid idea. But meant to push Instagram and Tic-Tic use. In 3k you can blow things up to 16x9 and have ok results. It also answers calls and will do as much as you connect it to. You get the phone audio over the glasses for calls, playing YouTube videos or anything your phone plays, whether an app the AI uses or not. I have Amazon Music and Audible attached so I can voice command them while driving, but Serious radio and YouTube music are fine, but you have to start them manually. The skip to next song glasses commands work on these apps too. Overall a very entertaining device.
