Set during the height of the Industrial Revolution, Grand Guignol presents a city overflowing with displaced workers, grinding machinery, and predatory elites. Factories tame nature and time, while monsters—both literal and metaphorical—stalk the powerless. Amid whispers at the witching hour and unseen eyes watching from the dark, players portray citizens who exist outside society’s narrow expectations: monsters, queers, and outsiders who cling to one another for survival, love, and meaning. Using the Belonging Outside Belonging system, Grand Guignol requires no dice, no masters, and no traditional Game Master. Instead, players share narrative authority, shaping the world together through evocative playbooks such as the Beast, the Gate, the Scholar, and the Ward. Each character embodies tension between control and surrender, power and vulnerability, desire and fear.
