Unveiling the Mystique of Francisco Goya's "Time of the Old Women"

Historical Context: The Era of Goya and His Artistic Influence

The Spanish Enlightenment: A Backdrop for Goya's Work

Francisco Goya, a pivotal figure in Spanish art, created "Time of the Old Women" during the Spanish Enlightenment, a period marked by intellectual growth and cultural transformation. This era saw a shift from traditional values to a more progressive outlook, influencing Goya's artistic vision. His work often reflected the societal changes and the complexities of human nature, making him a bridge between the old and the new.

Goya's Role in the Transition from Rococo to Romanticism

Goya's artistry represents a significant transition from the ornate Rococo style to the emotional depth of Romanticism. His paintings, including "Time of the Old Women," showcase a raw, expressive quality that captures the human experience. Goya's ability to convey emotion through his brushstrokes and themes set the stage for future artists, establishing him as a revolutionary figure in the art world.

Symbolism and Themes in "Time of the Old Women"

Exploring the Dichotomy of Youth and Age

"Time of the Old Women" delves into the contrasting themes of youth and age. The old women in the painting symbolize wisdom, experience, and the passage of time, while the presence of a young girl represents innocence and the curiosity of youth. This juxtaposition invites viewers to reflect on the cycle of life and the inevitable march of time.

The Representation of Folklore and Superstition in Goya's Art

Goya often incorporated elements of folklore and superstition into his works. In "Time of the Old Women," the old women are depicted as figures steeped in the mystique of traditional beliefs. Their portrayal evokes the superstitions prevalent in 18th-century Spain, highlighting the cultural significance of these narratives in shaping societal views.

Social Commentary: The Role of Women in 18th Century Spain

This painting serves as a poignant commentary on the role of women in 18th-century Spain. Goya's old women embody the societal expectations and limitations placed upon them. Through their expressions and postures, Goya critiques the marginalization of women, inviting viewers to consider their struggles and resilience in a patriarchal society.

Artistic Techniques: Goya's Mastery of Oil Painting

Brushwork and Texture: Capturing Emotion and Depth

Goya's mastery of oil painting is evident in "Time of the Old Women." His dynamic brushwork creates a rich texture that adds depth and emotion to the scene. The way he layers paint allows for a tactile quality, drawing viewers into the emotional landscape of the painting.

Color Palette: The Use of Dark Tones and Light Contrast

The color palette in "Time of the Old Women" is striking, featuring dark tones that evoke a sense of mystery and foreboding. Goya skillfully contrasts these with lighter highlights, enhancing the emotional intensity of the figures. This use of chiaroscuro not only adds drama but also emphasizes the themes of light and shadow in human experience.

Composition: The Arrangement of Figures and Space

Goya's composition in this painting is carefully crafted. The arrangement of the old women and the young girl creates a dynamic interaction between the figures. The spatial organization guides the viewer's eye, encouraging a deeper engagement with the narrative unfolding within the artwork.

Fantastic for rosacea, PD, atopic dermatitis, dry skin
I’ve been using this for close to a year and it is amazing for my super sensitive and dry skin. I have perioral dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and rosacea and live in Minnesota with bitter cold and the heater running over half the year. Cicalfate cream doesn’t flare any of these and it helps reduce redness and completely resolves dry skin. I use about a pea size amount AM and PM,, apply to dry skin, massage in, then mist with the Avene thermal water spray. Although the cream is thick, the slight white cast absorbs within a few minutes. I do not wear foundation so I don’t know how this affects it.it doesn’t burn my eyes and I’m a contact lens wearer. A big tube of cream lasts me the better part of a year.

Great for harsh winters
I was recommended this product by ChatGPT as an effective and safe product that my wife (who is currently nursing) can use. We have been very mindful of certain additives and chemicals in our products and this was able to meet our requirements. Separately in the harsh winter in the northeast, this has been extremely effective in protecting the lips

Ruined by Reformulation
New formula update: They ruined this product by reformulating. Used to be so hydrating, long-lasting, and the only thing that gave me relief from eczema. Now it is somehow SO drying, oily, and all around terrible. Judging by reviews here and on their website many customers are unhappy with the change. Done with Avene. Original five star review: This is a great all around lip balm, but if you struggle with perioral dermatitis/eczema then you NEED this. If I'm experiencing a flare, I slather on cicalfate+ at night but I can't exactly walk around with that during the day which is where this lip product comes in. It is calming, hydrating, and long-lasting. I have gone through more tubes than I can count. This was my first time ordering through amazon and I am happy to report I received authentic Avene.

It’s a God Send
I had a rash all around my lips and my lips got extremely dried out and started to peel. I used Avene Cicalfate Restorative Lip Cream and it really soothed my lips with the moisture they needed, and you don’t need to use a lot of this product. I plan on buying this again. Just wish the tube was bigger! I use other Avene products and I’m extremely happy with them.

Holy Grail Moisturizer for Rosacea
Style: Restorative Protective Cream-3.3 Fl Oz
In seeing so many negative reviews I felt compelled to weigh in as this is my favorite moisturizer. I have very dry, menopausal skin. Additionally, I have rosacea which seems to have been a nice gift from said menopause (you can only laugh, right?). It's very common for those of us in our 50's to have a compromised skin barrier and when an issue like rosacea is present, even more so. Because of all this my skin is very intolerant to most moisturizers and nearly all actives (over the last few years I've had to discontinue my retinols and chemical exfoliators). While ingredients like ALA's, petrolatum, mineral oil, parafin/bees wax, and lanolin are well tolerated and known to be quite soothing, they don't hydrate very well as they are more occlusive than moisturizing. Enter this product. Magically, it does both! It's marketed as a protective cream, which again implies occlusive, but it penetrates like no other. Gone is the tight, dry feeling that persisted even when I had a heavy layer of product on my skin (my previous moisturizer was Eucerin Original Healing Cream -- which still has its uses -- because it was the only thing I could put on my skin outside of squalane oil during a flare). Now, no topical can cure rosacea. However, the right product can calm the skin, repair the damaged lipid barrier, and improve its appearance. This moisturizer does just that and it's become my holy grail. Since starting this I've also added in the Cicalfate Serum which has only aided in repairing my skin. Another Avene product that works great for me is the XeraCalm Balm which helps with itching. I use all three of these daily and they've really helped fix the secondary issues that come with rosacea. As for the complaints about it being greasy or too heavy. I can see this not working for people with normal or oily skin (or perhaps only in moderation). But my skin loves the heavier weight and because one of the ways I soothe a flare is to keep a tiny mister bottle on hand and repeatedly spray my face so I have to guard against the drying effects of evaporation. These products are so lipid heavy that I can wet my face all day long without worrying about that, though I do reapply throughout the day. As for the watery consistency issue, I haven't had that problem but it does caution on the packaging not to expose the product to temperatures below 41 degrees F (5 C). I suspect that if it gets too cold either because of the weather or because of whatever warehouse it sat in during transit it will separate. Maybe open the package and before squeezing some out look to see if it has split and then shake it up/message the tube. So, if you have skin like mine don't hesitate to try this product. I'm leaving this absurdly long review for my struggling brothers and sisters out there with rosacea in hopes that it provides some relief! Happy moisturizing, internet strangers. ;)
