While most people think of Calvados as an apple brandy, pears are also allowed in the AOC. In the Domfront, or Domfrontais Region, the clay and limestone soils are more suited to the strong, deep roots of pear trees. Appellation law insists that at least 30% of the cider in this region be made from pear; Lemorton Calvados includes up to 80%.

The Lemorton family has a long history in the Domfront, with Didier Lemorton now running the domaine, 6 generations on. The 9-acre property is planted with both apple and pear trees, but the latter’s influence is dominant; for every 3 apples in their Calvados, there are approximately 7 pears. All trees are planted high (hautes-tiges) in order to preserve the orchards’ biodiversity, and when ready, the ripe fruit is simply allowed to drop to the bed of grass below so the family can collect it. This pear influence makes not only a lighter-colored spirit, but also one which emits its own distinct bouquet.

The Lemorton’s distill their cider after aging it for at least eleven months in large, old oak barrels. A single distillation takes place on a traveling column still, and Didier oversees the distillation personally. The clear spirit then goes into French oak casks with an average age of 30 years; time is the greatest factor in the evolution of these complex spirits.

About this Calvados:

Calvados distilled by Didier Lemorton at La Baillée Fétu in Mantilly, in the Domfrontais Region of Normandy

Juice is naturally fermented on the lees in large wooden foudres or tonneaux for 9–10 months

Distilled from pears (70–80%) and apples (the appellation requires a minimum of 30% pear)

Single distillation occurs on a traveling, wood-fired copper column still co-owned by Lemorton and two other Calvados producers in the area

Average age of the spirit is 10 years, aged in used French oak

Rich, oxidized aromas of pear permeate along with a touch of vanilla, white pepper and mint. A slightly viscous palate exhibits gentian, anise and cocoa with structured tannin and great length.

42.5% ABV

Good Fit Out of the Box
Size: 9, Color: Black
The shoes came with the correct size and is a good fit. They were originally pretty stiff, but are much better now after breaking them in. They look good. but as other's have said, they are made of synthetic leather and in my opinion have kind of a plastic look to them. The quality is good with ridged rubbber soles. I thought they were kind of expensive, but then again I haven't purchased these type of shoes in a while. A family member told me that if they were real leather, they would have been a lot more expensive. For what the shoes are I would recommend the purchase.

I wanted to love these
Size: 9, Color: Black Leather
These are very good looking in person, especially the buckles and the pop of red on black. Alas, I have another pair of Marc Joseph shoes to compare comfort and fit, and this pair simply hurts my feet.
