Notes and MethodsAt the turn of the twentieth century, Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862 1944) created a body of work that left visible reality behind, exploring the radical possibilities of abstraction years before Vasily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, or Piet Mondrian. Many consider her the first trained artist to create abstract paintings. With Hilma af Klint: Notes and Methods, we get to experience the arc of af Klint's artistic investigation in her own words.

At the turn of the twentieth century, Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) created a body of work that left visible reality behind, exploring the radical possibilities of abstraction years before Vasily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, or Piet Mondrian. Many consider her the first trained artist to create abstract paintings. With Hilma af Klint: Notes and Methods, we get to experience the arc of af Klint's artistic investigation in her own words.

Hilma af Klint studied at the Royal Swedish Academy in Stockholm where she was part of the first generation of female students. Up until the beginning of the century, she painted mainly landscapes and detailed botanical studies. Her work from this period was that of a young artist of her time who meticulously observed the world around her. But, like many of her contemporaries, af Klint was also interested in the invisible relationships that shape our world, believing strongly in a spiritual dimension. She joined the Theosophical Society, and, with four fellow female members who together called themselves "The Five," began to study mediumship. Between 1906 and 1915, purportedly guided by a higher power, af Klint created 193 individual works that, in both scale and scope of imagery, are like no other art created at that time. Botanically inspired images and mystical symbols, diagrams, words, and geometric series, all form part of af Klint's abstract language. These abstract techniques would not be seen again until years later.

Notes and Methods presents facsimile reproductions of a wide array of af Klint's early notebooks accompanied by the first English translation of af Klint's extensive writings. It contains the rarely seen "Blue Notebooks," hand-painted and annotated catalogues af Klint created of her most famous series "Paintings for the Temple," and a dictionary compiled by af Klint of the words and letters found in her work. This extraordinary collection is edited by and copublished with Christine Burgin, and features an introduction by Iris M ller-Westermann. It will stand as an important and timely contribution to the legacy of Hilma af Klint.

Time will tell
My dog can chew through anything so I didn't have high hopes but she is obsessed with this thing and it's really held up so far. She hasn't had it long, but it's looking good. It's already outlasted her other chews so I count that as a win. My only concern is that it could be too hard, and she might crack a tooth. I only let her have it when I'm there to supervise and if she gets a little too aggressive with it, I take it away for a while. We got this because my mom's dog has had one that's lasted a few months and he is another super-chewer that goes through toys like they're nothing. So, if you're looking for something that seems to hold it's own against a toy-destroying power chewer, this one is worth the price. It does have a fairly strong bacon smell at first (that will cling to your hands if you handle it), but that fades pretty quickly once it's out of the box.

Still standing
My one dog is a super chewer but the other has more delicate jaws and tends to be susceptible to hurting herself on some of his more sturdy toys. I grabbed this on a whim because it looked a bit narrower (good for my girl) but still sturdy (good for my boy and my furniture). First of it was definitely what I was hoping for in size. While sturdy it is still thin enough that my girl doesn't hurt herself when she inevitably runs away with it when the other dog isn't looking. However, it did take both dogs a good deal of coaxing to take an interest. Eventually I ended up hitting the toy with some gravy from their food before they really wanted anything to do with it. Whatever the scent of the toy is it clearly wasnt enough motivation for either of them. (Hence the four stars) but the gravy worked as an attractant for my dogs at least. And now for durability. It's extremely sturdy. Despite the rocky start it is now one of my boys go too toys when he gets to pick something to play with. My girl likes it but it is certainly more his toy then hers. Which is good because his jaws are insanely destructive and so far this toy is holding up far better then the other two I purchased at the same time, and as it's one of his favorites it's not from lack of use! Over all this toy is great if you have a super chewed and/or a dog with thinner jaws who need a good quiet time toy. If your dog isn't as instantly curious as you'd like I recommend some sort of attractant.

Greatly enjoyed the toy
Rambo really love it. Great chew toy for dogs that love to chew/tear up most toys of their 🧸 toys.

A challenging chew.
We have 3 Gordon Setters, 2 of which like toys to chew on. These last a long time. The only thing I would caution ⚠️ you about is that over time, these develop sharp edges. If they rub the toy on you, you will know it. Especially if you are wearing shorts. I do like these toys for their longevity.
