Betta albimarginata

Rare mouthbrooding wild betta known for its striking red coloration, white fin margins, and peaceful natural behaviour

Quick Facts

  • Scientific Name: Betta albimarginata
  • Common Name: White-Edge Mouthbrooding Betta
  • Size: Approx. 4–5 cm
  • Temperament: Peaceful
  • Difficulty: 🟡 Intermediate
  • Best Kept: Pair or species group

Is this for you?

✔️ Good if:

  • You appreciate rare wild bettas
  • You enjoy natural behaviour and breeding projects
  • You keep planted or blackwater aquariums
  • You want a peaceful feature fish

❌ Avoid if:

  • You want brightly aggressive display bettas
  • You keep highly aggressive community fish
  • You prefer hard alkaline water setups
  • You want a low-attention beginner species

Why this fish?

Betta albimarginata is one of the most sought-after wild betta species due to its peaceful temperament, elegant appearance, and fascinating paternal mouthbrooding behaviour.

Males display rich red coloration with distinct white edging along the fins, creating a refined and natural appearance very different from commercial domestic bettas.

Unlike many fighting bettas, this species is generally calmer and can often be maintained successfully in carefully planned species groups or peaceful blackwater aquariums.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: 30L+ recommended
  • Temperature: 24–28°C
  • pH: 5.5–7.0 preferred
  • Water: Soft, clean, stable
  • Diet: Live, frozen, and quality prepared foods
  • Setup: Heavily planted with hiding spaces

Temperament & Compatibility

  • Generally peaceful for a betta species
  • Best kept with calm tank mates
  • Can be shy in busy aquariums
  • Suitable for species-focused setups
  • Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping fish

Common mistakes

  • Treating them like domestic fighting bettas
  • Keeping in overly bright or exposed tanks
  • Using hard alkaline water long-term
  • Housing with aggressive community fish
  • Skipping lid coverage — wild bettas can jump

Breeding Notes

Betta albimarginata is a paternal mouthbrooder.

After spawning, the male carries the eggs and fry in his mouth until fully developed, making this species especially interesting for hobbyists interested in natural breeding behaviour.

Stable soft water and low-stress conditions significantly improve breeding success.

Pair with

  • Leaf litter and driftwood
  • Blackwater botanicals
  • Soft lighting and floating plants
  • Live and frozen foods
  • Peaceful nano fish

Important Notes

  • This is a wild betta species, not a domestic splendens type
  • Colours may intensify with maturity and conditioning
  • Requires stable water quality
  • Secure lid recommended
  • Best suited to calm aquariums
NTA Insight:
Wild bettas like albimarginata are often less about flashy finnage and more about behaviour, rarity, and natural interaction. Many hobbyists end up preferring them over domestic bettas once they experience their calmer temperament and breeding behaviour.

Great toy...
Size: 12"
My dog LOVES this toy! It's very durable as he loves to throw it around. It was bigger than I expected, but my little shih Tzu still loves it.

Not for "chewers" or puppies.
The toy is not "ruff and tuff", at all. Puppy had it torn to bits in just a few minutes. Nothing like handing your dog the toy while you finish unloading groceries only to come back and it looks like it snowed stuffing in your living room. It's made of a very thin material and is quite flimsy. Won't be buying this brand again. Might be good for an older dog who just wants to carry it around or play fetch. Although it's so light and flimsy, throwing it any farther than a few yards probably wouldn't work...

Favorite Handy Toy
This snake has been around our house for years! My shitzu/maltease dog is tiny, and he has a small mouth, but I call him Diablo! He loves to growl and act like a horrible terror when it comes to fighting over a little squeaky toy, and we use the snake to try to "push" the little toy away from his mouth. He loves to bite the snake and pull on it viciously. The snake has tiny holes in it, but has pretty much stayed intact. I am getting ready to add more stuffing inside it so it won't be so floppy. years of use have flattened it out. I love this thing. Well worth the money for a small-mouthed dog. The squeaker in the head was fun while it lasted, but the beauty of this snake is its shape and versatility as a pull on, and sneak up behind toy.

Fantastic Toy!!!
Pattern Name: Duck, Pattern Name: Duck
16 squeakers!! Every one works! Best toy I’ve found!! At 71yrs, I’ve had many dogs. Many toys. Rocky couldn’t be happier. Which makes me happy! It’s a bright yellow duck, kinda flat. 16 squeakers!! Big, for my 5.5 lb Pomeranian, but, he’s all boy, so, it’s great. He won’t leave me alone!! Play time, and, looking in my eyes with all the love he feels for me…. I’ll buy every toy this company makes, just to get that look from my pup!! Sturdy, so far. Beautiful orange and yellow colors. Soft toy. I love it, myself!! The box says it’s a 27 inch toy. So….its a 27 inch toy. Yes…for the many squeakers, I’m gonna hunt for more from this company. Rocky and I are having a Ball with this toy!!! A great bonding item for us. And, I enjoy seeing my boy’s eyes sparkle. I would do anything for Rocky!! Thank you, Amazon!!!
