For many scientists, much of the frustration of writing comes from a lack of understanding the process. Ironically, we often have extremely specific routines for experiments, analyses, and other scientific tasks, but we approach writing without a plan. Although there is no one-size-fits-all approach to writing, this book outlines first the process of writing and then the process of publishing. By understanding what goes into a manuscript, what makes writing effective, and what writing workflows exist, authors can neutralize any anxiety about writing by having a plan. Similarly, the rapidly-changing landscape of publishing can seem like a black box to new authors, yet when dissected we learn that there is nothing special about peer review or publishing that any author cannot handle.
