Moral Origins: The Evolution of Virtue, Altruism, and ShameFrom the age of Darwin to the present day, biologists have been grappling with the origins of our moral sense. Why, if the human instinct to survive and reproduce is "selfish," do people engage in self sacrifice, and even develop ideas like virtue and shame to justify that altruism? From the age of Darwin to the present day, biologists have been grappling with the origins of our moral sense. Why, if the human instinct to survive and reproduce is "selfish," do people engage in self-sacrifice, and even develop ideas like virtue and shame to justify that altruism? Many theories have been put forth, some emphasizing the role of nepotism, others emphasizing the advantages of reciprocation or group selection effects. But evolutionary anthropologist Christopher Boehm finds existing explanations lacking, and in Moral Origins, he offers an elegant new theory. Tracing the development of altruism and group social control over 6 million years, Boehm argues that our moral sense is a sophisticated defense mechanism that enables individuals to survive and thrive in groups. One of the biggest risks of group living is the possibility of being punished for our misdeeds by those around us. Bullies, thieves, free-riders, and especially psychopaths -- those who make it difficult for others to go about their lives -- are the most likely to suffer this fate. Getting by requires getting along, and this social type of selection, Boehm shows, singles out altruists for survival. This selection pressure has been unique in shaping human nature, and it bred the first stirrings of conscience in the human species. Ultimately, it led to the fully developed sense of virtue and shame that we know today.A groundbreaking exploration of the evolution of human generosity and cooperation, Moral Origins offers profound insight into humanity's moral past -- and how it might shape our moral future.Binding Type: Hardcover

Best tanning lotion for natural sunbathing
I've gotten darker than I've ever gotten in the sun, with this product to help. I don't sit outside all day long either. I apply the lotion and sit in the sun for a half hour up to an hour, and wow what results! I never used to tan much, no matter how hard I tried so I credit the lotion for my success. I'm Irish descent so for my legs to be this dark is miraculous. This lotion doesn't stay greasy or gross like some. It will stain clothing before it sinks into your skin, so be cautious while applying. There's a light sweet coffee scent...very effective product. Will buy again.

BEST STUFF EVER
A friend sent me a bottle of Maui Babe from Hawaii. Let me tell you. I slather this on with a mitt at the beach and also use some other spray lotions. Here it is November and I still have some tan left.

Tan and glowing skin all year round!
I've been using Maui Babe for as long as I can remember. My mother actually introduced me to the brand years ago when we were living in Hawaii. As a lifelong sun worshiper, my skin still looks great, and I credit that to staying moisturized and taking excellent care of it. Prepping your skin before sun exposure is essential, and Maui Babe has been a key part of my routine. It not only gives your skin a gorgeous bronze glow but also helps tighten and smooth its appearance—plus, it smells amazing! Even when I'm just wearing shorts or a skirt, I apply it to my legs for a beautiful bronzed finish. Most importantly, the ingredients are clean, so you're not putting toxic additives on your skin. Highly recommend!
