The first book highlighting the historical roots and contemporary implications of the silhouette as an American art form

Before the advent of photography in 1839, Americans were consumed by the fashion for silhouette portraits. Economical in every sense, the small, stark profiles cost far less than oil paintings and could be made in minutes. Black Out, the first major publication to focus on the development of silhouettes, gathers leading experts to shed light on the surprisingly complex historical, political, and social underpinnings of this ostensibly simple art form. In its examination of portraits by acclaimed silhouettists, such as Auguste Edouart and William Bache, this richly illustrated volume explores likenesses of everyone from presidents and celebrities to everyday citizens and enslaved people. Ultimately, the book reveals how silhouettes registered the paradoxes of the unstable young nation, roiling with tensions over slavery and political independence.

Primarily tracing the rise of the silhouette in the decades leading up to the Civil War, Black Out also considers the ubiquity of the genre today, particularly in contemporary art. Using silhouettes to address such themes as race, identity, and the notion of the digital self, the four featured living artists--Kara Walker, Kristi Malakoff, Kumi Yamashita, and Camille Utterback--all take the silhouette to unique and fascinating new heights.

Presenting the distinctly American story behind silhouettes, Black Out vividly delves into the historical roots and contemporary interpretations of this evocative, ever popular form of portraiture.

Weirdly textured
Size: King, Color: Dark Gray
I have bought and loved jersey sheets in the past, that have all been as soft as a well worn cotton t-shirt. These arent soft. They have the stretch of jersey, but not the soft smooth texture that they should have. Even after washing a few times these are one of my least favorite sheets I've ever bought on Amazon.

Luxury sheets at affordable price
Color: White, Size: King, Color: White, Size: King
I absolutely love these sheets! They are incredibly soft, comfortable, and feel so luxurious. The color and overall quality are beautiful, and they made my bed feel like a hotel. They fit perfectly and stayed in place all night. There was one small issue — mine had a tiny black line/stain on them when I opened the package. But honestly, I loved the sheets so much that I decided to keep them anyway because the comfort and quality completely outweighed that minor flaw. Definitely would still recommend!

Soft, Comfortable & Great Value
Color: White, Size: Queen
I’m really happy with these sheets! They are soft, comfortable, and feel nice against the skin. They fit my mattress well and stay in place without slipping. The material feels lightweight but still durable, and they wash well without losing softness. The color looks clean and exactly as expected. For the price, this is a great deal. I would definitely buy them again 👍

Soft and comfortable sheets for the price
Color: White, Size: Queen
Absolutely great sheets. I was worried that for the price of these sheets, they would be very scratchy and heavy but to the contrary. I washed the sheet right out of the package and the sheets retained its softness and they are very light (which is great for the summer) and very comfortable. Highly recommend the purchase if you are looking for simple sheets.
