Description

Native Hoops: The Rise of American Indian Basketball, 1895-1970A prominent Navajo educator once told historian Peter Iverson that "the five major sports on the Navajo Nation are basketball, basketball, basketball, basketball, and rodeo." The Native American passion for basketball extends far beyond the Navajo, whether on reservations or in cities, among the young and the old. Why basketball a relatively new sport should hold such a place in Native culture is the question Wade Davies takes up in Native Hoops.

A prominent Navajo educator once told historian Peter Iverson that "the five major sports on the Navajo Nation are basketball, basketball, basketball, basketball, and rodeo." The Native American passion for basketball extends far beyond the Navajo, whether on reservations or in cities, among the young and the old. Why basketball--a relatively new sport--should hold such a place in Native culture is the question Wade Davies takes up in Native Hoops.

Indian basketball was born of hard times and hard places, its evolution traceable back to the boarding schools--or "Indian schools"--of the early twentieth century. Davies describes the ways in which the sport, plied as a tool of social control and cultural integration, was adopted and transformed by Native students for their own purposes, ultimately becoming the "Rez ball" that embodies Native American experience, identity, and community. Native Hoops travels the continent, from Alaska to North Carolina, tying the rise of basketball--and Native sports history--to sweeping educational, economic, social, and demographic trends through the course of the twentieth century. Along the way, the book highlights the toils and triumphs of well-known athletes, like Jim Thorpe and the 1904 Fort Shaw girl's team, even as it brings to light the remarkable accomplishments of those whom history has, until now, left behind.

The first comprehensive history of American Indian basketball, Native Hoops tells a story of hope, achievement, and celebration--a story that reveals the redemptive power of sport and the transcendent spirit of Native culture.

Poor quality product, hardware not appropriate
Size: 24 Inch, Color: Black, Number of Items: 1, Size: 24 Inch, Color: Black, Number of Items: 1
Do not waste your money on these, not as described, very cheap, hardware does not work. Going to have to repair my wall before I can do anything else. Completely unacceptable product. Very frustrating and was not properly represented in the marketing advertising. Do not buy. Would like to return, but waited 3 days to long. If I had opened them immediately I would have seen the poor quality.

Put shelves in before connecting the sides
Color: Black, Size: 6 Tier(8 inches)
Once it’s put together, it’s very nice. I will caution you to remember that the two sides do not get attached before you put in the shelves. You cannot put the shelves in once the two sides are connected. If you remember that, the assembling is not so bad..

👍👍
Color: White, Size: 6 Tier(8 inches)
I love how it makes my laundry area looks, It fit perfectly in the small space between the wall and the washer. I would have like if the big containers of detergent fit better in the lower shelves, but I made it work. It's not adjustable, the quality it pretty good, no complaints about the quality, assembly was easy and it's pretty stable.

Sturdy and safe, but would like taller drawers
Color: Black, Size: 6 Tier(8 inches), Color: Black, Size: 6 Tier(8 inches)
It is sturdy, safe, kind of any to put together. I just wish the drawers were higher to better fit products in. But I like how they roll from underneath!
