Never before on CD!A tragic story matched only by the fabulous swamp pop music!Wrote several of Fats Domino's classic records!Contains every title, issued and unissued, recorded 1957 - 1960 by the legendary Jimmy Donley, plus multiple takes of previously known singles. Includes an extensive, newly researched biography, discography and many never seen pictures from Jimmy Donley's sister. Jimmy Donley has become a cult figure, his fame spreading well beyond the boundaries of Louisiana swamp pop and rockabilly. A prolific songwriter - compared by some to Hank Williams - Jimmy Donley never enjoyed success with his own recordings. Much of his legacy rests on the unlikely musical and personal bond he forged with Fats Domino, who recorded more than half a dozen of his songs. Music aside, the details of Jimmy Donley's tragic life have made him one of the most notorious figures of his era. He is remembered today for the extreme and incessant violence in his life. Prior to his suicide in 1963, Jimmy Donley's aggression was freely directed at his numerous wives, girlfriends, as well as casual patrons in the Gulf Coast bars where he performed. You didn't want to come near him when he was drinking, recalls Jimmy Donley's sister. The trouble was, Jimmy Donley drank nearly all the time.Jimmy Donley's music has never been reissued with the care and attention to detail it deserves. Bear Family remedies all that with the release of this CD, featuring an extensive bio based on new interview material by Hank Davis, a generous collection of Jimmy Donley's classic sides for Decca Nashville, as well as a special glimpse at the behind-the-scenes events at one of Jimmy Donley's recording sessions. It's all here: every title Jimmy Donley recorded between 1957 and 1960, including multiple takes and previously unissued material. This set offers the best available look into the life and music of one of the Deep South's legendary figures.

What Merwin Thought Represented Him Best
Format: Paperback
If one volume could sum up adequately W.S. Merwin's artistic development and illustrate his place in American literature with some justice, "Migration" does the job. At least as importantly, it gives us the poet's own opinion on the poems for which he might want to be remembered, much as Nathaniel Tarn inspired Pablo Neruda to do in the selection of Neruda's poems that Tarn oversaw. I bought "Migration" at roughly the same time as and and cross-referenced his selection from those titles in "Migration" against the whole. While I still have one or two favorites that did not make the cut, I found the choices he made consistently better-inspired and more timeless than the poems that surrounded them (though overall Merwin has remained a consistent and astonishingly fine craftsman throughout his career). For those who want to go further back than Merwin's more recent books for Copper Canyon Press should not be disappointed.

ws merwin's collected poems
Format: Hardcover
it's a hardback and it's in great condition. apparently it's a library book that has been in more than one sale, at one point someone had put a price of fifty cents on it. it's sad that arguably one of the better modern writers did not find a permanent home but that meant a great deal for me. also, i hope the reason the book started its journey wasn't because the library folded but that might explain why the book left the shelves to begin with.

Better than Expected
Format: Paperback
Though the title impied there were new poems in this volume, I found some of my favorites, but didn't notice any new ones. Never mind, they are wonderful, and I liked this book so much, I purchased a copy for a friend and published poet, who's poet in the schools, Grace Grafton, who is familiar with Merwin's writing. That made both of us happy. On a practical level, it is easier to schlep a single volume with you than three of four, when what you want is 'La crême de la crême.' Makes a welcome addition to any collection, a great gift to introduce Merwin, and a pleasure to read the smooth, ariculate poetry that is food for the soul. Antoinette Constable
