The function of the switch is to prevent starting while in gear, and will only function correctly i. e. allow Ignition to ignite when in park mode or neutral. It also operates the reverse lights. Fits a vast range of cars including Rover, Triumph, MG, Daimler, Jaguar, Ford etc etc
