Some masters were terribly cruel while others were kinder, but having been enslaved for over a decade of her life, Josephine had even forgotten her original name. At one point, her current master went away on business, leaving Josephine with the Canossian Sisters in Venice, Italy. Her time with the sisters led her to learn about who God is, answering an inner sense of some creator that she had felt all along. She discerned a call to religious life, and refused to leave the sisters upon her master's return. Her insistence caused the Superior to seek the intercession of the Italian authorities. The case went to court, and it was brought to light that slavery was outlawed in Sudan before Josephine was even born.
Josephine was declared free, and she chose to stay with the sisters and become one herself, taking on the name Josephine Margaret. In her tremendous faith, Josephine often thanked her abductors, crediting them to putting her on the path to her convent where she came to know God. Thus, her quotable phrase, "We must love everyone," carries immense weight for an impactful message of Christian love and mercy.
