In the 1930s and 40s, a father-and-son team of folklorists hit the highways, byways and rural routes of the United States, traveling in a battered pickup truck laden with primitive recording equipment. John A. Lomax and his son, Alan, covered thousands of miles, stopping off at tarpaper shacks, juke joints, prison yards, and other out-of-the-way places to listen to native singers and to record them for the Library of Congress archives. The Lomaxes made over 10,000 field recordings, and from this vast collection they compiled a hugely successful series of anthologies, beginning with the widely acclaimed American Ballads and Folk Songs in 1934. That collection was followed by the present volume in 1941.
Here are the music and words to some 200 songs recorded at the state penitentiary in Milledgeville, Georgia, in Michigan lumber camps, Louisiana rice fields, on Western cattle trails, and in many other locales around the nation. A beguiling mix of the familiar and the rare, the tunes range from spirituals and other songs of faith to chain-gang work chants and field hollers, as well as game songs, lullabies, courting songs, Cajun airs, breakdowns, and many more. Well-known standards such as "Hush Li'l' Baby," "Old Blue," "John Henry," and "Jack o' Diamonds" appear alongside less-familiar tunes, including "The Lady Who Loved a Swine," "You Kicked and Stomped and Beat Me," and the miners' lament, "Oh, My Liver and My Lungs."
This new edition features an informative introduction by award-winning author Judith Tick, a faculty member at Northeastern University. Notes on tune origins, two indexes, and an extensive bibliography round out this important archive of authentic folk songs and ballads.

fit and comfort
Size: 8.5, Color: Grey, Size: 8.5, Color: Grey
Perfect fit, i was a little anxious about the size and fit. As you can see in the pictures, they look great and they are very light. I would give them a five-star rating as the comfort is there, only the point is a little hard on the toes, I hope that goes away with usage.

Comfortable Oxford style shoes
Size: 10, Color: Black, Size: 10, Color: Black
Comfortable shoes that almost slip on each time. The material is a cotton mesh that is very soft and breathes well. I would not recommend walking in wet grass as the water can get through the mesh and make your feet wet. I normally wear size 10 for sneakers and this was true to size. I have extra room in the toe box. I do think the shoe feels a little narrow, but with the mesh area being stretchy, it does not cause any discomfort. The narrowness of the shoe makes it look more form fitting around my feet. Overall the shoe is comfortable while also giving an impression of high quality foot wear. It looks elegant too. The shoes also seem pretty durable given how much they feel like sneakers. The leather at the tip of the shoe does not scuff easily, which is great! Overall good value too!

Poor quality. Returned after arrival, soles seem to be made of plastic.

High End Style Without the Markup
Size: 12, Color: Navy, Size: 12, Color: Navy
I love the deep navy color of these shoes because it looks even richer in person than it does in the online photos. I usually wear a size 12 and these do have some extra room so could have gone down a half size. The white sole creates a nice contrast that makes the navy color pop. For me, these hit that perfect sweet spot where I look put together at work that is business casual without feeling like I am wearing stiff or formal dress shoes. These are comfortable shoes because the fabric is breathable and keeps my feet cool throughout the day. I especially like that the toe box bends naturally and does not leave ugly permanent creases across the top of the shoe. The padding around the ankle is soft and there is no rubbing even when I am walking a lot. My favorite part has to be the slight stretch around the opening because it lets me kick them off or slide them on without having to touch the laces. This is a total win for my lazy side and makes them my go to pair when I am headed out the door in a hurry. The stitching feels very durable and the overall build quality seems like it will hold up for a long time.

Good value for the money.
Size: 9.5 Wide, Color: Beige
Comfortable right out of the box. Great style and well made. The more you wear the softer they get but maintain their overall appearance.
