NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - Finalist for the PEN/USA Award in Creative Nonfiction, the Thurber Prize for American Humor, and the Audie Award in Biography/Memoir

This Random House Reader's Circle edition includes a reading group guide and a conversation between Firoozeh Dumas and Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner

"Remarkable . . . told with wry humor shorn of sentimentality . . . In the end, what sticks with the reader is an exuberant immigrant embrace of America."--San Francisco Chronicle

In 1972, when she was seven, Firoozeh Dumas and her family moved from Iran to Southern California, arriving with no firsthand knowledge of this country beyond her father's glowing memories of his graduate school years here. More family soon followed, and the clan has been here ever since.

Funny in Farsi chronicles the American journey of Dumas's wonderfully engaging family: her engineer father, a sweetly quixotic dreamer who first sought riches on Bowling for Dollars and in Las Vegas, and later lost his job during the Iranian revolution; her elegant mother, who never fully mastered English (nor cared to); her uncle, who combated the effects of American fast food with an army of miraculous American weight-loss gadgets; and Firoozeh herself, who as a girl changed her name to Julie, and who encountered a second wave of culture shock when she met and married a Frenchman, becoming part of a one-couple melting pot.

In a series of deftly drawn scenes, we watch the family grapple with American English (hot dogs and hush puppies?--a complete mystery), American traditions (Thanksgiving turkey?--an even greater mystery, since it tastes like nothing), and American culture (Firoozeh's parents laugh uproariously at Bob Hope on television, although they don't get the jokes even when she translates them into Farsi).

Above all, this is an unforgettable story of identity, discovery, and the power of family love. It is a book that will leave us all laughing--without an accent.

Praise for Funny in Farsi

"Heartfelt and hilarious--in any language."--Glamour

"A joyful success."--Newsday

"What's charming beyond the humor of this memoir is that it remains affectionate even in the weakest, most tenuous moments for the culture. It's the brilliance of true sophistication at work."--Los Angeles Times Book Review

"Often hilarious, always interesting . . . Like the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, this book describes with humor the intersection and overlapping of two cultures."--The Providence Journal

"A humorous and introspective chronicle of a life filled with love--of family, country, and heritage."--Jimmy Carter

"Delightfully refreshing."--Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

" Funny in Farsi] brings us closer to discovering what it means to be an American."--San Jose Mercury News

Sturdy, Be mindful if a few things in advance
Size: 5-Tier (Not included planks), Size: 5-Tier (Not included planks)
Good quality. The black pipe compliments our decorating style so we are over all pleased. Be mindful of the following: - Needs a little bit of expertise in making sure all the flanges line up and are level/plumb. - Even if/when you pre assemble tubing according to printed instructions, the shelving won't line up and some connection parts will have to be loosened to line up. - I consider us (me & the hubs) little above average when it comes to DIY but this took some figuring out and cooperation during installation because we decided to align the holes on the flanges up with our studs to enforce the holding strength (for weight of books and family photo albums/picture boxes). This choice was prompted by the poor quality of plastic drywall anchors included with the product. Now that I have installed one, I will customize next time with more height (to accommodate taller children's books that don't fit the current set up) and a bit deeper (to accommodate a 12 inch shelf/wood insert). Aesthetically, it will not accommodate a book taller than about 9 inches. Our photo albums range up to 15 inches and because the shelving depth from back wall to front of wood shelf is about 12 inches, it hangs over the front too much to look balanced. With the current set up, I'm limited with what can be placed on the shelves - size wise. While this does not have anything to do with the quality of the product, you may not know to consider these aspects in advance so thats why I include it in my review.

A Solid, Stylish Solution!
Size: 4-Tier (Not included planks)
I use this industrial pipe shelf setup in my salon to display and organize products, and it’s been a great fit. The hardware is sturdy and gives a clean, rustic vibe that works well with my space. It was easy to install, and I added my own boards to customize the look. The open design makes it easy for clients to see what’s available, and it’s held up well with daily use. A solid, stylish solution for keeping things neat and accessible.

Easily assembled.
Size: 3Pack of 5 Tier (Not included planks)
Easily assembled, seems sturdy and built to last. Once attached to wall seems even sturdier than expected. Anchor pieces included but I choose to find studs to anchor to.
