Early in WWII Cecil Beaton, celebrated for his portraits of celebrities such as Greta Garbo and renowned as the official photographer of the royal family, was commissioned by Britain’s Air Ministry and Ministry of Information to undertake the challenge of photographing the war in the Middle East. In the months leading up to Tobruk and El Alamein, amidst news of battles with Rommel in the desert, Beaton traveled across Iraq, Palestine, Syria, Egypt, Iran, North Africa and Portugal. This first edition of Near East, with over 45 pages of photogravures after photographs by Beaton, is accompanied by his engagingly modest journalistic account, and features his images of soldiers in the field, blistering sandstorms, the shattered wrecks of enemy planes, desert patrols and holy sites in Jerusalem. Beaton’s exceptional skill as a portraitist is seen in his images of the Queen of Persia, the Emir Abdullah of Transjordania, and in his image of the seven-year-old King Faisal II of Iraq, who, Beaton writes, “enjoyed changing the films in my camera.” The king would be assassinated at the age of 23 in 1958. Knighted in 1972, Beaton also achieved renown as a writer, artist and as an Oscar-winning costume and stage designer.

New testament in its world
Format: Hardcover
Ordered this book for my seminary class. NT wright is an excellent writer very clear but can go deep. If you're looking to know more about the writings of the New testament and how they came to be, I recommend this book.

Very Nice Resource for Church Bible Study Teachers
Format: Hardcover
Dr Wright’s book are known for their readability. This book can be read cover to cover or used as reference material on a single chapter. It does weigh 4.5 pounds probably caused by the heavy glossy paper pages. The maps and illustrations require this type of paper (I think) and there are illustrations and maps on most every page. As usual with a Wright & Byrd book, the NT is placed in a geographical and historical context that sheds light on its meaning to modern readers. If you teach this subject at your church (or just want to learn), you will benefit from the information in this book.

Looks fascinating but poorly wrapped

This was supposed to be a Christmas gift. You would think with a book of this weight that it would have been wrapped in a thin bubble wrap to keep the dust jacket from ripping, right? Because that is what any serious book seller would have done if it had been shipped by them. But, as you can see, from the other reviews, Amazon did not do that. Keep that in mind while enjoying the low price, and consider that you might have to return it and hope for a better wrap job the second time if it’s going to be a gift.
As far as content, though, it looks fascinating!!!!! The pictures, especially of the art of the period, are gorgeous. Maps and tables are super helpful. It may not be as in depth as others would prefer on each subject. However, it is a great one-stop starting point for someone who is just getting their toes wet. I have been a Bible reader/student for over twenty years, and I found something informative on each page. So unless you have a PhD in Biblical studies, I think you would find this a useful purchase and a foundational book for your library.

An amazing reward at the end of the book
Format: Kindle
This is a magnificent nudge to value and form a christian word view based on the story of Gods work in the world.
There is a thread that runs through the surveys of each book - all of history, past, present and future, has been compressed into Jesus, and the life that has burst from Him through his resurrection gives meaning to all things, in all places across all of time. The authors help us see this meaning in scripture and then diffuse that meaning through our lives.
The final chapters offer a tremendous picture of what it looks like to live for God in Gods world - it was deeply inspiring!
