Triple LP version. Cortijo y Su Combo with Ismael Rivera, and Mon Rivera with his tongue twisters and trombones, are pioneers of a story that opened up the way to the salsa movement. With an unprecedented mix of flavors and Afro-West Indian rhythms, their dance proposals competed with the best tropical orchestras of the '50s and '60s. The legendary legacy of these Puerto Rican orchestras, however, hadn't been the subject of a proper retrospective, until now. In the case of Cortijo and Ismael, it's a cultural legacy related to the "third root," or African contribution, in Puerto Rico's Caribbean culture. Since it's birth in the year 1954, until today (half a century after it's break-up in 1962), Cortijo's combo and it's stellar singer, Ismael Rivera, have been the best exponents of a modern, orchestrated and commercial way of performing bomba and plena - Afro-Puerto Rican genres in whose tradition they had been raised in the capital's neighborhood of Santurce. To these native rhythms they added other Caribbean ingredients which were popular at the time, creating and integrating an innovative proposal that many consider the greatest precedent of the salsa movement that would emerge years later in New York. In only eight years of existence, the group became hugely successful in Puerto Rico and New York, the West Indies and part of Latin America - particularly Panama, Venezuela, Colombia and Peru - and even Europe. With percussion upfront, Cortijo y su Combo were a tight mess of rhythms, expressive even in the shaking and dancing of the band members while they performed their choreography on stage. This compilation looks at the importance of Cortijo and Ismael in the context of the time, contrasting their recordings with those by other contemporary artists with more or less similar styles. Among them is the essential figure of another great "plenero" and salsa pioneer such as Mon Rivera, known as "El Rey del Trabalengua" (The Tongue Twister King) (due to his comedic way of playing around with syllables to modify the rhythm and sense of a sentence) and for having started the "trombanga" kind of sound, which replaced trumpets and saxophones with trombones. It was a key innovation in the birth of boogaloo and salsa, which particularly inspired Eddie Palmieri and Willie Col+¦n. These three legends are accompanied by other tropical ensembles of the same period - Orquesta Panamericana, Sonora Ponce+¦a, Mario Ortiz & His All Star Band and the singer Chivirico - but also groups and vocalists related to the "jabara" tradition or country music, whose repertoire includes, apart from seis and aguinaldo, plenas, bombas and guarachas. It's typical instrumentation of strings and accordion, together with it's peculiar singing style, offer an interesting contrast with the way in which the tropical orchestras played those same rhythms. Includes extensive liner notes by compiler Yannis Ruel, illustrated with original artwork and memorabilia.

Cute distressed shorts but size up!
Size: 30, Color: Athens Mid Short - Medum Indigo, Size: 30, Color: Athens Mid Short - Medum Indigo
Love these shorts! These Levi’s run small. I usually wear a 28 and ordered a 30 because that’s what was available. I’m 5’1”, 135 lbs for reference. They’re distressed and shorter in front which are perfect for us short gals.

My go-to shorts this summer
Size: 30, Color: Athens Mid Short - Medum Indigo
These are easily my favorite shorts this summer. The fit is super flattering and they have that classic Levi’s look that never goes out of style. The denim feels high quality and holds its shape without stretching out too much during the day. They’re comfortable once you break them in, and they pair well with pretty much anything. I also like that they’re not too short or too long—just the right length for everyday wear. Definitely worth it if you’re looking for a staple pair of denim shorts!

Favorite Summer Shorts worn on repeat
Size: 31, Color: Luxor Heat - Light Indigo
These are my favorite shorts for summer. I have several pairs that I wear on repeat because they’re comfortable, flattering, and hold up really well. I ordered a size up from what I already have since I’m postpartum, but I ended up not needing it—my original size still fits me best. So I did return these, but only because of sizing, not the product itself. I do suggest sizing up 1 size from your normal size. I usually wear a 29 and have these in a size 30 and they fit great. They are a true jean material and not strechy. Highly recommend these if you’re looking for a reliable, go-to pair of denim shorts.

Cute - SIZE UP
Size: 33, Color: Luxor Heat - Light Indigo
these are super cute and look very flattering but they run SMALL. I used to wear 32s in Levi’s but lost 30 pounds this year so I ordered a size down and they didn’t fit at ALL. I reordered a size 33 and they still fit tighter. My Levi jeans in a 32 barely stay on me anymore but these are snug in a 33. They’re still super cute and comfy, guess it gives me room to size down into them for awhile lol
