The earliest known prison memoir by an African American writer--recently discovered and authenticated by a team of Yale scholars--sheds light on the longstanding connection between race and incarceration in America." A] harrowing portrait] of life behind bars . . . part confession, part jeremiad, part lamentation, part picaresque novel (reminiscent, at times, of Dickens and Defoe)."--Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE In 2009, scholars at Yale University came across a startling manuscript: the memoir of Austin Reed, a free black man born in the 1820s who spent most of his early life ricocheting between forced labor in prison and forced labor as an indentured servant. Lost for more than one hundred and fifty years, the handwritten document is the first known prison memoir written by an African American. Corroborated by prison records and other documentary sources, Reed's text gives a gripping first-person account of an antebellum Northern life lived outside slavery that nonetheless bore, in its day-to-day details, unsettling resemblances to that very institution. Now, for the first time, we can hear Austin Reed's story as he meant to tell it. He was born to a middle-class black family in the boomtown of Rochester, New York, but when his father died, his mother struggled to make ends meet. Still a child, Reed was placed as an indentured servant to a nearby family of white farmers near Rochester. He was caught attempting to set fire to a building and sentenced to ten years at Manhattan's brutal House of Refuge, an early juvenile reformatory that would soon become known for beatings and forced labor. Seven years later, Reed found himself at New York's infamous Auburn State Prison. It was there that he finished writing this memoir, which explores America's first reformatory and first industrial prison from an inmate's point of view, recalling the great cruelties and kindnesses he experienced in those places and excavating patterns of racial segregation, exploitation, and bondage that extended beyond the boundaries of the slaveholding South, into free New York. Accompanied by fascinating historical documents (including a series of poignant letters written by Reed near the end of his life), The Life and the Adventures of a Haunted Convict is a work of uncommon beauty that tells a story of nineteenth-century racism, violence, labor, and captivity in a proud, defiant voice. Reed's memoir illuminates his own life and times--as well as ours today. Praise for The Life and the Adventures of a Haunted Convict "One of the most fascinating and important memoirs ever produced in the United States."--Annette Gordon-Reed, The Washington Post "Remarkable . . . triumphantly defiant . . . The book's greatest value lies in the gap it fills."--O: The Oprah Magazine "Reed displays virtuosic gifts for narrative that, a century and a half later, earn and hold the reader's ear."--Thomas Chatterton Williams, San Francisco Chronicle " The book's] urgency and relevance remain undiminished. . . . This exemplary edition recovers history without permanently trapping it in one interpretation."--The Guardian "A sensational, novelistic telling of an eventful life."--The Paris Review
"Vivid and painful."--NPR "Lyrical and graceful in one sentence, burning with fury and hellfire in the next."--Columbus Free Press

3.5 stars. Cant tell if it is this or a variety things I am doing, more details in this review
Sort of a tough one for me to review. Not a clear yes or no. My long answer may help it make sense, and hopefully help you decide to try it (or continue with it if on the fence).
I started using this a month ago. I am just finishing, or just finished my 1st bottle. Prior to that by 2-3 months, I started their Provitalize and Previtalize combo. I initally bought Inerdy as a single bottle, then I had gotten my second bottle as it was part of a bundle, and I was curios. Who doesnt want more energy?
The claims are promising, and it is made to sound like the results will be immediate. I was skeptical because the ingredients in this aren't exactly fast acting as far as I can tell. No caffeine. But it mentioned taking with caffeine to boost effect. Sure, I can do that.
Well no matter if I took it on its own or with caffeine, I cant say I noticed anything significant. But since I had it, I figured I would just keep taking it as the entire supplement formula is pretty good, all stuff our bodies can use anyway, or are downright needful.
I hadnt made any changes other than adding in the 3 products. Maybe I added in other probiotics (because as I learned more about probiotics, the more I realized we REALLY need the for overall health and wellness). I know the probiotics have added great value to my life, but I still wasnt (kinda still not) sure about INERGY.
BUT, in reflection over the past month or so, I HAVE NOTICED, a reduced level of fatigue. For awhile, I was pretty much closing my eyes around 3p for a quicky nap. With the hours before that with a dragged down feel. Like I never fully woke up. Coffee minimally helps, matcha green tea helps a lot, but I still didnt feel overall "good". I'd drink my matcha to power through some basic daily tasks. Didnt really have anything left over for other tasks, projects, fun, etc.
Could be that we're on the cusp of summer, and energy levels naturally rise. Could be that I have begun eating a lot better and greatly reduced my desserts intake (because I dont have that nagging desire for them--def thanks to probiotics!), or it could be a combo of everything, including the ingredients in this INERGY.
That is why I cant say for sure if it is this, or a combo. But I do know I needed time with it, and did not experience anything significant in first couple of uses.
I take this supplement and pretty much all of my probiotics (and prebiotics--do not skip those!) in the morning. I just wake and feel more motivated. I dont necessarily jump right into my day, but the start of my day is easier, less effort. Like I shaved a few years off. That sort of feeling. As I do chores and such, same feeling exists. I have been tackling projects that I have not been able to muster the mental or physical stamina for years. Sad.
Things have been just different for me lately, and I absolutely contribute it to probiotics, prebiotics, and quite possibly this Inergy. As with the probiotics, it very well may take a month, two months, even three months to see/feel the cumulative effect. I think it helps in a more holistic manner.
If you just need a big boost, and not concerned or interested in helping the body to get their in its own time, naturally, I would say B vitamins and matcha. That would produce a more immediate but short lived affect. Could really do both. I still drink my matcha for times I just need to have that added motivation/ambition feel.
So no, this didnt seem to do a thing just by taking it a couple of times. And as I start my second bottle, I am not entirely convinced. But what is in it is good for me anyway, and I can say that the entire package (second time I got it I got it as part of the Previtalize, Provitalize, and Inergy
I will probably continue with it, for awhile anyway. Or however long it seems to be helping me. I did consider stopping it, but at this time I do find value in seeing how much it can help.
I dont rate on price. All their stuff is pricy. As far as probiotics go, good products are pricy. This Inergy? maybe the overall formula could be found for less, not sure.
I'd give this 3.5 stars if I could. 4 makes it sound like sure thing, when I am still not entirely sure. However, I have decided to continue with it (so four stars), and I do think there has been some improvements just not immediate. I think it is worth the try if you are patient. Maybe you will be one of those that notice something right away!
