The Gospel According to Spiritism is the third of the five books that make up the Spiritist Codification, a set of teachings transmitted by high order Spirits, and organised and commented upon by Allan Kardec.

This book interprets the teachings of Jesus from the perspective of Spiritism. It aims to reconcile the teachings of Jesus with the principles of Spiritism, a philosophical and religious movement that believes in the existence of spirits, reincarnation, and communication with the spiritual world.

The Gospel According to Spiritism by Allan Kardec explores several key themes:

  • The Reconciliation of Science and Religion: Kardec aimed to bridge the gap between scientific understanding and spiritual beliefs. He sought to demonstrate how Spiritism, with its focus on evidence and reason, could provide a scientific framework for understanding spiritual phenomena.
  • The Immortality of the Soul and Reincarnation: The book emphasises the concept of the soul's immortality and its journey through multiple lifetimes (reincarnation). It suggests that these lifetimes provide opportunities for spiritual growth and evolution.
  • The Importance of Love and Charity: Love is presented as the fundamental principle of the universe. The book stresses the importance of compassion, forgiveness, and selfless service to others as essential for spiritual progress.
  • The Nature of God and the Afterlife: Kardec explores the nature of God as a loving and just force, and provides insights into the different levels of the afterlife based on individual spiritual development.
  • The Role of Free Will and Responsibility: The book highlights the importance of free will and individual responsibility for one's actions and their consequences. It emphasises the need to use free will wisely to make choices that align with spiritual growth.

These themes are interwoven throughout the book, offering a comprehensive framework for understanding the relationship between spirituality, morality, and human existence.

This text also discusses the afterlife and the importance of preparing for it. Overall, the Gospel According to Spiritism is a book that seeks to provide a spiritual framework for living a meaningful life. It is a popular text among Spiritists and is often used as a guide for personal and spiritual development.

parodies of a classic
Format: Paperback
In Shamela, Fielding gives us the behind-the-scenes true Hollywood version of Pamela's story (and it's tabloid worthy). In Joseph Andrews, Fielding shares the tale of Pamela's brother caught in the same sort of madcap antics she endured.

An Excellent Film
The success of this film is derived from Paul Schrader’s concept for the film and his hiring of his production designer, Eiko Ishioka, a Japanese female artist. The four chapters are presented in a simple setting with ingenious design while telling Mishima’s personal history and development into a Nobel price winning author and martyr for his political beliefs. This blu ray is a new restored 4K digital transfer of the director’s cut. As usual Criterion Collection also included a wealth of commentaries, interviews, a 1985 documentary about Mishima and a booklet. A very best blu ray package if you are interested in the person and subject matters.

Astonishing Movie
This is exactly the kind of movie that would never receive funding today and get within hailing distance of production. This movie was my 'gateway drug' into the dark and fascinating world of Yukio Mishima which is one of those things where, as the saying goes, "If you know, you know." This film is basically a collection of several short films woven together. One is the story of Mishima himself, from childhood up to the morning of his last day. The other shorts are taken from four of his novels, including my personal favorite, 'Runaway Horses'. For the biographical portions of the film, which are mostly in black-and-white, Roy Scheider's narration is excellent as well. All in all, this movie is a beautiful introduction to Yukio Mishima as well as an artistic triumph for Paul Schrader.

Fantastic and Thought-Provoking
Mishima is a complicated figure in literary and Japanese history, but this film manages to capture the complexity of the man without seeming like it either loves or hates him. Great cinematography and the reenactments of Mishima's stories are wonderful. Music is fantastic as well.
